These guys just got indicted for what's looking like the biggest data breach in history.

The guys (2 Vietnamese and one Canadian) have been charged with carrying out the largest data breach of names and email addresses in internet history.

They stole over 1 billion email addresses from at least 8 email service providers and then hijacked those same companies' distribution platforms to send their spam.

And they did it on an industrial scale - making millions of dollars!

One of the Vietnamese guys, Viet Quoc Nguyen has been described as an affiliate marketer:

"As an affiliate marketer, Nguyen allegedly received a commission on sales generated from Internet traffic that he directed to websites promoting specific products. Nguyen allegedly used the information stolen from the ESPs to send ?spam? emails to tens of millions of customers and provided hyperlinks to allow the purchase of the products. These products were marketed by Da Silva?s Marketbay.com"

And they were making some serious money before they got caught:

"Between approximately May 2009 and October 2011, Nguyen and Da Silva received approximately $2 million for the sale of products derived from Nguyen?s affiliate marketing activities"

Now that's what I call scaling something up!

Imagine how much the supplier made if their affiliate made $2 million. Wow

Email Spamming is all about big numbers because the cr is really low, but still is one of the most profitable methods

one thing i will never understand is that guys who pull stunts like this why not protect themselves better?! like moving to a country/tropical island which gives zero fucks to foreign authorities, most probably don't have any internet regulations and have no extradition treaties with the US, also keep the money where the US is unable to seize it
doing stuff like this while residing in Canada and in the Netherlands is basically asking for trouble or did they think they're invincible?!

I don't think they sent emails to all the addresses though - perhaps they were caught before they really ramped things up.

"Nguyen, along with Giang Hoang Vu, 25, also a citizen of Vietnam, then allegedly used the data to send "spam" to tens of millions of email recipients."

2 million dollars from tens of millions of emails is not a bad hit rate to be fair.

It's always the little guys that get jailed. Why no CEO or Bankster responsible for the recession sit in jail? Yeah, they put some clickbait in there for fancy, but the big guys keep profiting. These 2 just did what companies do, but on a larger scale.

A few years in jail for a few millions are not bad unless you accidentally dropped soap.

unless the fbi seizes everything they can and i'm pretty sure it won't be only a few years, they're charged with computer and wire fraud, it's more like a 10 years long prison sentence or more

if they would have put effort in protecting themselves and their assets, they still could be laying on a beach sipping their pina coladas instead of rotting in a prison cell for long years to come
i mean these are must be clever individuals otherwise, but why do this from a place where you can go to prison for it, if you're get caught?!

at least they will have time thinking about the next big thing
