As a twitter user, I absolutely HATE when people send me a direct message after I followed them. It really affects my general opinion of them, and I sometimes unfollow them right away.

But, as an entrepreneur, I need to send traffic from Twitter to the AppStore, and I consider using this technique. A friendly welcome message with a little hint pointing to the AppStore.

Question: Have you seen any difference on account growth when you activate auto DM message to new followers? Anyone has data on this?

It really depends on a niche itself. And if you randomize the messages. For example my software (www.tweetupbot.com) can support spintax as well as multiple messages being sent (so every user gets a different message). Basically you probably have noticed that every single person who send you the welcome message sound EXACTLY the same, so it is like "hey, thanks for following me" or something similar.
If you run some kind of services you can provide some quick info in the welcome message instead of telling bullshit, so that becomes useful. ;)

As a normal user, I really find it annoying and I tend to unfollow right away specially if they ask you to click their link.

Yeah, I'm just wondering hot effective it really is. Do you have any experience you'd like to share?

I'm interested in this as well. I mean if the people are interested in your brand / Twitter page, I would assume they will be also interested in you website. Politely suggesting them to visit the site could get them to check it out, in case they didn't see or click the URL on the page when they followed you.

I personally don't mind the DM:s from people I follow but it's pretty obvious they are 100% automated. Interested to hear experiences!

When you receive most likely customized message after some period of time (not instantly after following specified person) why would you even think that it is automated? :D

Then I suppose a simple "Thanks for the follow" message won't make any sense. In that case, what would be your DM?

I meant for those messages that I get instantly after I follow someone. Otherwise, I doubt anyone average with zero IM knowledge would realise a customised DM is automated.
