Affected by the September Helpful Content Update? What have you noticed? This is mine;

The update was rolled out on 14th September; for me, I took a 20% hit. There was a spike two days ago, but it dropped again. My site doesn't use AI; of course, I often use ChatGPT for ideas, but I write my content myself.

A theory, a big emphasis on "theory," that I have noticed (I'm assuming) is Mediavine Sites were affected the most. I went through the comment section on a post about this update, and more than 90% of the comments there claim to have been affected. And if you watch the group well, these people often go by the books and follow Google's "teachings" to the T, at least from the comments I've often read there.

I'm curious, have you been affected, and how much percentage, and while I AM NOT BLAMING MV at all, I am just curious.

Of course, these are the early days, and one shouldn't call now + Correlation isn't causation, but this is too hard not to ignore.

I will temporarily remove my ads for a few days and watch closely; please share your experiences.

Could the fact that Mediavine sites offer the option to subscribe to newsletters be relevant? These are all carefully selected and generally of high quality, but Google wants to eliminate all websites in order to provide direct answers with its AI. However, if some sites have newsletters, users who have registered will seek information on these sites where they have left their email rather than on Google. If Google eliminates these sites with newsletters, it may have other users willing to ask their AI. Of course, this is a theory and it would be like squeezing every last drop, but with Google, anything can be expected.

Some people now speculating about updated content too.

We need some big report of all the winners and losers.

My medical site most of them went to the bottom page despite serving quality non AI content, I will have to revamp my strategy next time.

So I've updated some of my pages to reflect the new products that are available. These have tanked the pages even more. Curiously, the pages that I've left alone have jumped up a little.
At this point, I've got no idea what's going on, but this certainly isn't a helpful update. As an aside, I got an email from a competing site asking if they could buy mine. They offered low 3 figures and I'm sure you can all guess what kind of response I sent back.

I have some old sites I haven't touched. Here is what the ahrefs audit said:

All of these sites are/were white hat and I haven't worked on them in 6 months.

Site 1 - unaffected by 2022 Helpful content update
Site 2 - destroyed by 2022 HCU
Site 3 - destroyed by 2022 HCU

This 2023 update

Site 1 - lost some positions, particularly positions 1-3.
Site 2 - gained a ton of positions for results which are outside of the top 3 search positions
Site 3 - gained a ton of positions for results which are outside of the top 3 search positions.

this thing ruined my website with manually written content and natural backlink profile, who knows what these people are doing with these algorithms. I hope that it will recover in the near future since it cut my traffic for two thirds.

Did anyone find a pattern? At the moment I can't find anything, it's all very strange.

TBH, I am just going to focus on posting and posting even more content with a strong persona accross all content, the reason for this is

1. EEAT right? Bullshit, but yeah, Reddit is being ranked and because the people there bring their whole persona to their comments, "I, me, when I use to, I have been a...for 15 years, in our company etc etc" So, I would churn out so much content with this persona and of course with GPT4 assistance.

2. Google claims the HCU only targets articles that are "Unhelpful" (whatever that means), and in most cases if your site has too much "unhelpful" content it could be a site-wide effect, so I will churn out as much "helpful" (refer to point 1) content as possible to should I say balance/counter the "unhelpful" content.

3. Fuck Google!

Only pattern I have found is that it reversed some of the 2022 HCU.

Of course Reddit or Quora don't bring anything special because I can go with my user and ChatGPT filling all Reddit with fake stories and Google will think it's real content hahaha. I hate you Google.

I've seen another downturn in my main site. I'm sick of big companies that have full pockets creating 3 sites with the same shit from the Amazon API across all three.

The worst part is that the information on the sites is incorrect and can actually be dangerous. Helpful,my arse.
Oh nooo... it's all about the money....again.... totally not expected on G part.

No point in blogging anymore. Forums have dominated the top positions in my niche.

I am thinking of launching a forum and have bots create questions and answers based on my keywords.

How much will such a bot cost?
You can do it with AI and some plugin

One of my main sites dropped off a cliff. White Hat all to a fault.

After the drop off we have tried so many things.
  1. Perfect site speed scores
  2. Enhanced schema
  3. 3xx internal link cleanup
  4. GSC fixes
  5. ......
We are at the bottom but there are no signs of recovery.

Recently I have tried updating some articles. While there is no loss or no gains I am convinced this is the push that is needed. We are about to roll out a series of updates across major blog posts. If this triggers some gains, we will report back for others to follow suit.

We have seen competitors with garbage sites basically outrank us. Their content is bad, with no schema, no technical, crap speed, and terrible UX (one site is dark orange with black text that is like 7px)...

We have some AI sites that are just crushing it in terms of growth.

All in all these last updates are a joke. Google just likes to stir the pot.
