Be careful with adwords coupons. I've unintentionally spent about $600 on automatic payments by using adwords vouchers.

I just needed to do a couple of one off campaigns so grabbed a couple of coupon codes and set up 2 new adwords accounts. As they were one-offs I used my wifes credit card to activate the accounts - wrong I know.

Apparently all accounts opened with a coupon default to automatic payment, therefore racking up an bill at the daily rate that you set, even after the coupon is used. It would have been in the "terms" really reads them.

So now my wife is screaming at me to get the money back.

The accounts were set up in fictional names with all adds pointing to my money site. Theres no way I'm going to google (even if you could find a way of contacting them) and asking for a refund.

There's also no way I'm contacting Visa for a chargeback and having anyone from Google see that I was abusing their system.

I didn't input any payment information with my adwords account. I just used the voucher.

Why did you input your credit card?

you had to pay a $10 activation fee - $10 to use a $80 coupon sounded fine to me.

I think you have to pay the startup fee to activate the adwords coupons, isn't it? Is you campaigns are running?

Anyway don't worry about my details - just check your adwords account if it was setup to use a coupon. I've been using adwords for years so am not really a noob to the whole setup. But this was the first time I used a coupon and I got badly stung, just trying to save others from losing their hard earned.

No. I never paid a fee or inserted any payment method.

I get my coupons from hosting though.

All the adwords accounts I have used have a top up facility. Once the 'top up' is exhausted then the ads stop. Manual input is required to add more money to the account.

Mind you I haven't used it for a couple of years so maybe they have changed the setup. They sent me a voucher the other day for £100.00 so I will have a play with that.
