So today I had a meeting with a business consultant here in Montreal . I am starting an Online Marketing firm and I wanted to get a professional Business Plan written for this .
Besides the fact that I may pay between 5 and 10K Canadians Dollars for this , everything went great , They will send me a questionnaire tonight nd they will take it from there to send me the proposal .
Our meeting was around 1 to 1 hour and half long , I got some ''free'' advices along the way which I am going to share with you :
1) Never call yourself an Online Marketer or Google Expert or stuff like that , it sounds cheap and it doesn t convert , use the word ''Consultant'' as a title on your business
2) First impression when meeting with the clients helps 60 to 70% to convert a potential client to paying one .
3) If you have the slicest doubt that you can close a sale , hire someone who can
4) You can offer the same service under another name with huge price differences depends on your clients .
So You can offer package A to a restaurant , you name it Package B ( more fancy name) and offer it to phone company for 5 to 10 times the real price
5) You need to find your strong points ! Those will make you sales
6) You need to find what differentiate you from other businesses
7) Make the 2 above cleat in your marketing campaigns either offline or online
8) Don't let any guessing or doubt when launching a marketing campaign , means don't assume that people know that you will for example offer them a report for backlinks , tell them that you will offer them a report , or if they can stop their contract at any time .
People need to know those things apparently , don't assume that they will understand
From the mouth of the business consultant '' potential clients are not quick at understanding , you need to tell them everything you do''
9) Don't under price your services , 90% of people will think that you will never deliver if you are cheap

Those were some advises that I got today , I knew most of what he told me today but I hope this will help some newbies , I will keep you updated on the business plan and on how it will go .
Cheers

Make sure your business "consultant" isn't charging you too much (as mentioned could be the case in the info he gave you). Frankly, I'd start doing my own research online for a business plan....you can create one yourself, although I'm sure your consultant is bringing some value to the table. $5k-$10k for a business plan sounds awefully over priced to me. Nonetheless, thanks for the post and best of luck to you.

I will wait for his business proposal and we will see , I should have mentionned that I am mainly focusing on branding the Firm thought , so it will be a Branding and Marketing plan .

I have my own firm registered but I'm not incorporated yet. It's still a one-man operation right now tho. Do you specialize in a particular service if I may ask?

A business plan doesnt cost that much. I could draft you one up for a fraction of that cost and i actually have experience working as a consultant with my own business and employees.

This company must have smelled your money coming. Don't invest that much man, do it smart.

One thing added to that list should have been always research who you do business with before investing a five figure deposit on a business plan.

go to hire a freelancer- you can get a good business proposal done for $30-40 rule #1 in business keep you cost down.

I do most of the services that you can offer online in matter of advertising .

Thanks for the help guys , but as I said I will wait for their business proposal first .
The only problem that I didn t want to go with Freelancing on this , is that I wanted someone from Montreal to do it .
I wanted to have a business and a branding plan customized for Montreal and Canada . I am not planning to target US and the Rest of Canada for short term .

i think the whole price thing can work if put the right way. In my experience, some people look for a slight price different, as long as it is from a business that looks semi trust worthy. Think competitive advantage.

I have a domain called http://www.nosweatseo.com/ im selling all unused domains/ websites i have - the plan was to link to my other website which i no longer have the time or passion to put into it... can do a great deal if your interested.

5-10k is not totally over priced but you can probably get the same for your self if you want. just look on the docs website of business school or the MIT 50K competition. you should be able to get a decent template there!

I know this might sound 'weird' and going against the 'traditions'.
But why do we even need a 'business plan' these days?

According to the book "Rework" (good book btw), written by the CEO of basecamp (which I am sure everyone heard of);
No one reads business plan nowadays, unless you are trying to get some financial support from investor or getting a loan from bank.

However, I assume that most people here on BHW are in the 'online marketing' industry, which requires minimal funds to get started.

Of course, I am not saying the above theories are correct and can be applied to all businesses. Just saying.....
