    Hi Guys,

I was hoping to pick the brain of some of the more worldly members here on BHW.

I own a site in the video games/technology niche that exists to sell a particular product. This site is ranking #1 on Google for all of it's 14 medium/high competitive keywords. It's in a great place and gets around 130-140 targeted visitors a day with a bounce rate of about 45%

The site's pre-sell copy works really well and around 35% of those visitors are clicking through to the sales page I am an affiliate for. Each sale I make earns me $50 - $60. The conversion of the sales page for the affiliate product, however, is far from the best - around 0.5%. It is also the only product in the market so replacing it with another isn't an option.

I've been thinking about using my site to start building a mailing list. I think the amount of targeted traffic, in this particular niche could be a nice list to build up and it would likely grow at a stable rate.

I am actually in a position at the moment where I'm comfortable giving away a product that I own the rights to which is very similar and holds the same appeal to my visitors, instead of holding out for the few, odd affiliate sales that come through.

So, my question to you guys is this:

Would you persist with the current set-up, crossing your fingers that affiliate conversions increase

    or

Would you give away the similar product as a giant serving of 'bait' to land (possibly) 5 - 10 (possibly more) of these gamers a day to start building a very specific technology/video games mailing list?

I am just looking for the most effective way to move forward and after hearing the saying 'the money is in the list' more times that I can count, I figured that this might be a magnificent opportunity to start building my own.

I appreciate you taking to the time out to respond with your thoughts.

    Thanks!

If you have a product that is similar and holds the same appeal ... try no longer sending your traffic to that affiliate that isn't converting very well.

Instead, give away your product for "free", but require them to fill out a survey or something first. Then stick a CPA on it. If its gaming related, most of the visitors I'm thinking are going to be happy doing a CPA to get your product for free.

Worth a try to see if you make more money.

Looks like the affiliate sales copy is just not up to scratch. I would create a ten page PDF download and throw up a clean squeeze page to get a list going.

Maybe a cheat sheet or something that they can download once they've subscribe.

Once subscribed you can slowly increase conversion rates through active communication. But ultimately they still have to click on affiliate copy.

See if there's a way you can bypass affiliate copy and go straight to cart. Then if its possible you can rewrite.

Top marks for hitting the #1 G spot in a competitive niche

Well either way you would need to increase the traffic, that's for sure so you can make more.

Dealing with your product you own, you could propose it for free as an alternative in 2 steps.

You could use FB Fist for instance which would allow you to create a uber targetted list within a few clicks for the visitor and also an incentive CPA offer to fill. So you make money for each download and you create your list.

I'd start building the list first. Then I'd either charge for the product you own the rights to, or create a new one to sell.

    Hi LovervsFighter

In my opinion the major problem is the salespage... As I see it you got the following options:
    - Make your own salespage and redirect people who want to buy directly to the checkout from your affiliate
    - Contact your affiliate and tell him that his salespage is worth shit and that he should redesign it
    - Start beeing your own affiliate and sell the product you own the rights for... you could also offer a free trial of the product you own the rights for and go for a sale afterwards....
    - Create a new product

    Something you should do anyway:
    - Lower your bounce rate!!!
    - Start a forum where these gamers/tech interested people can interact...
    - Building a list is never wrong - just don't make it to obvious (like HUGE popup and stuff...)

    cheers olystyle
