So I was researching some keywords for someone I'm doing some work for today. As part of the work I'm doing I've managed to get them a link on a site from a well known person in their industry, in return for us linking back to them, all well and good.

Out of interest today... I had a look at the domain in SEMRush of the person we have linked with.

Funnily enough they were ranking for some really strange words nothing to do with the industry... A bit of investigation and it seems there are tonnes of pages on their site that look this:

    www.theirdomain.com/somepornphrase
    www.theirdomain.com/tinder-something

    etc

and they link to porn offers...

So I'm guessing someone has hacked their site? or they got involved with a shady web developer?

So a couple of questions, does this happen often? is their a term for it?

They are ranking on the first page for some of these keywords.

I'm thinking it would be good to obviously let them know, but I'm also thinking can I make some money in the process? How would you go about that? Do I just tell them what I've discovered and tell them I can give them a full report, and clear it all out? For a certain amount of money? If so what amount would you say is reasonable? There's like thousands of these links on their site...

I was a bit worried they might think i'm involved somehow... but I've never had access to their server, so I guess they shouldn't expect that?

Anyway made me laugh... and broke the monotony of keyword research up, checking some of those links out... but on a more serious point... advice/thoughts?

Shameless self bump hope that's ok it's been like 17 hours.

I've found out a bit more info in the meantime, and am familiar with the 'type of hack' now.

So my main question is what anyone thinks is a reasonable price to disinfect a site of ~12k links like this, and get it back online?

I guess the work will also involve:
    - trying to pinpoint how the exploit happened.
    - removing any malicious code (and tracking it down).
    - taking some steps to try to make sure its not as easy for them to do it agian.

This happens all too often. It sucks. Yeah, they were hacked. Probably because they used a nulled theme, or an old theme with a vulnerability.

There are many articles online on how this stuff happens.

They better hire a good pro for this, it's not easy cleaning up after such a compromise and if they plan on recovering, plan on paying a hefty price.

Desolving links that are indexed can take 3 months each one that if google does take them down.

The theme will have to be deleted and a fresh new one put in place but all the articles images and video will have to be re added .

Your looking at a big job , many hours of work looking at £80hr for how many hours it takes .

    Can be done .

What your buget???? might be cheaper per hour as a piece work one price...
