I am a small business owner with a self built website. For the last couple of years or so I have concentrated my SEO efforts on a single key phrase to my home page. I have been ranked #1 for this term for over a year and I have a Google page rank of 2. This ranking drives about 1,000 people to my local business website each month. When I dropped to #3 in the ranking for a few months traffic decreased to about 300 people per month. I have a list of about 20 or so key phrases that I would like to rank #1 for. I currently have a ranking in between 6-30 for these terms just due to my content I guess.

I was thinking about optimizing internal pages for these term as not to disturb my current #1 ranking key phrase, but the issues I see with that is that the list of 20 key phrase appear in Google with the organic and places listings merged.
What I am wondering is if I optimize an internal page can it rank #1 because it is not attached to a places account?
Do you think I should optimize these phrases to my home page or my internal pages (all internal pages have a Google page rank of 0)
