Hi, I`m about to open up an office which with 5 employees and yes this is the first time having to buy some sort of computers for an entire office so Im seeking advice from others who have done this before. What I need is a setup where five people can work in differnt offices but all using the same server to pull files from etc. My workers will need to use the internet and I will run some programs like scrapebox, cl scrappers and some email verifying programs.

What do you guys think I need and can you offer a place to buy these items?

    Thanks in Advance

Google apps and livedrive will give you an enterprise system that offers collaboration and anywhere access, and its cheap.

the next step would be a server based network and or terminal server setup, but that gets expensive.

i just wrote a massive post but pasted over it when I meant to copy it:(

if you want advise (free) just pm me, and if you want help with setup, I can offer that as well.

Buy 5 plain old computers and take one high configuration computer that will run 24 x 7. You will also need an internet connection having a static IP address. If you are into one physicaL network, then connection is too easy. If not, then Remote Desktop / Team Viewer should do the job.. You can even connect through SSH if you plan to make the server a nix box..

if they will work in different offices then best you can do is buy vps. all will have access to it.

it is cheap and can be used 24/7 without fear . buy from hostgator or any other.

What type of budget are you looking at ?

    What type of Fileserver -
Backup and/or security requirements. Raid, Encryption, Security.
Does it matter if a ticked off employee is able to snatch your data or use against you ?
Is there a confiscation issue and/or sensitive data ?

Are you looking to buy 5 plain jane walmart computers or something a bit more, single screen, multi screen.

I use newegg a lot, if you need some custom boxes and do it yourself I'd go with them.
Best Buy or local company if your going to need tech support and fast hardware replacments.
Wally World if you just need plain boxes. Guess you could trade a playboy subscription to a neighbors kid for tech support.

I don't know what your doing exactly. It's your Business, everything your business does will be on your systems. How important is that ?

Cant do that from iPhone I don't think. And wysiwyg doesn't have an undo button :-(

The ironic thing was that I was trying to copy what I'd wrote to the clipboard - which I always do in case something goes wrong on submission.

You can also set up terminal server on one VPS to allow multiple login. Or you can have a dual VPS environment - one for file server and one for terminal server.
If you do it properly though, the licensing will be expensive - although some people do offer monthly licensing for terminal server as well as office etc.

i also have some contacts for VDS setups (virtual desktops that are linked together).

but my opinion would definitely be google apps (or office 365) and livedrive (or Dropbox) as its the cheapest option. - 5 apps users will be $25/month total, and livedrive will be between $15-$55 / month depending what options you want.
then you have full cloud based backup of ALL data, instant sync and collaboration between all users, file revisions, shared calendars etc.

i personally use that system, and have also resold it to many companies, and it works well.

you could also set up a nas device if you just want an on site solution, but in my opinion they are unreliable, and you'll have a logistics issue with backing it up and so on.

I'm currently thinking about a similar setup.. my biggest problem is the lack of decent internet connections! I'd need something that could provide 4-5 pc's with a 100mbit capacity each... next to impossible around here without paying horrendous amounts...

Anyway, get yourself some cheap computers (no need for a video card for example), hook them up with Dropbox (or similar) and use one or more VPS for the tools (If you have a similar problem with the internet connection) plus setting up a simple network is easy, Just take another cheap computer, throw in some large amounts of storage and hook up a network to the other pc's using the spacious computer as a server.

If you need that much bandwidth you need to get them on vps's, cheap clients and then something like Dropbox for collaboration (as this works in a terminal server environment where livedrive doesn't).

i would strongly advise against setting up a work station to act as a server though - client os' are not built to act as servers, there are limitations on the amount of connections for example, and it will always be falling over. If you have enough cash to buy an additional client, then you should buy a raid based NAS, or even a home server solution instead (like a NAS, but with some variant of windows server installed on it).

Hmm.. I've been testing a VPS solution for my tools atm.. The only problem is that to efficiently run most Tools (Scrapebox for example) you need over 2 gigs of ram, which amounts to high monthly costs especially if you want to get the most out of it and have multiple VPS. It would definitely cost me more in the long run than the setup I listed earlier.

Im not sure if the deal is still on now, but I have a Dedicated server with 2xquad core Xeon, 100MB connection and 24GB ram for around $80/month (with 2008 licence as well), from there, I run Hyper-V and can have 3-4 vps running at a time with no problem.
