We are a small internet retailer who does anywhere from 5-30 orders a day. Most of the products we sell are priced a few hundred dollars and our average order value tends to be about $200. Our normal emailing list is about ~10,000 emails which is compiled from emails of existing customers and opt-in form through our website. We obtained a few months ago a list of emails (500,000) for $200 that are specifically involved in our industry. Looking at the emails themselves, its a fair bet that at least majority of these people buy or use what we sell. We want to do something with these emails but we don't want to get any massive penalties for it or end up running afoul of something. We are also not looking to keep hammering the same 500,000 people over and over. Instead we would like to send 1 email with a very generic and popular promo, see how many are interested and then hopefully retain those people as future customers and add them to our regular email list. I do have a few questions. 1. In what ways can we end up screwing ourselves over? i.e. getting our site blacklisted/banned for whatever reason, etc. 2. Should we even bother with this, or is this more likely to hurt us in the long run than help us? 3. If we do proceed, where should we look to contract a person like this and what should we be looking for? Any and all help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
