So I scored my first ever webdesign client, built their site, sold it to them, end job. No problem so far, they love the site and are super stoked to get promoting it.
Its an Ecommerce website by the way, I built it on WooCommerce plugin with the studiopress Genisis theme (crystal child theme).

Now comes my dilemma... He Emailed me last night asking if I want to do SEO for it now. My concern is it would also be my first SEO client and although I know how the SEO game works Im a bit worried about taking on the responsibility of ranking his site with all the panda/penguin activity going on. The guy is both a friend of my moms and a pretty nice guy so I dont want to charge him for SEO and than have google close him down for over optimization or poor link building or some other dumb shit that they have been slamming perfectly legit sites with more and more over the last year.

Im not really sure how I should handle this one, if I should take it on and just do white hat and hope for the best, refer him to someone with more experience with Google's black and white beasts, or tell him that SEO is dying and that he should probably just focus on social networking and PPC traffic (I could probably get hired to do this for him too).

    Any advice is welcomed,
    -Ian

    I say take it!

I got this in my inbox earlier:

It's a good insight and should help you produce a plan for his seo campaign. Long and short is don't over optimise your anchor text and only place links within relevant content, something that when I started thought would be obvious but then I discovered BHW and until now google's algorithm was very easily gamed.

Depends if you are interested in working on the site and doing SEO - if you are, but your planning to learn as you go then offer him a money back guarantee - that way you get the job, your being upfront with him and if you don't perform, he gets a refund and you don't feel bad for letting him down.

You are just like me-I can never do business with close people to me,never. Not family especially!
Say thank you,and that you are good at what you do and that you could not do a good job in other fields, that is why you can't take it- YOU DON'T WANT TO HARM HIS BUSINESS.People always love it whan you want the best for their business.
Stay on your good karma path ,do a good job and business will flow to you.Thank the lord for sending you these kind of dilemas.
    Good Luck!

Do you sell a used car to somebody you know?

    I wouldn't, but for me..

I handle the local SEO game -- and I dominate the noobs and corp's out here in a huge market.

You said it best.. "Don't do dumb shit"

And I always guarantee a rank of at least X keywords (depending on popularity of niche).

You should be able to rank a few keywords on the first page just by purchasing a few of the services
    around here on BHW...

    Good luck =]

You must keep your reputation high so only do it if you are sure you can do it.

If SEO is something that you're looking to get into, I would say go for it, but for a discounted price. I know that when I play around with own sites, I can be a bit reckless, so it could be a good learning experience to work on a project where you have no choice but to be careful.

If you expert then should take the job and you will offer him that after I finish my work you will see it and then you will give me money. Because if you don't do it according to his demand then it is bad.
