I'm looking for the best methods for finding clients. Particularly clients that will pay around $500+ for a word press theme or website for the small-medium sized business.

Right now I am dealing locally which works ok but I want more clients, I want recurring subscriptions too.

Here are options I am looking at

    Craigslist
    SEO
    Social Media
Youtube video tutorials in web design

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Also could anyone help me with doing SEO and Social Media for a web design company? How do I get quality fans and how do I optimize and get ranked in such a competitive market?

    Regards,
    fungames

Use the search button, figure out a ranking method and stick with it.

Even in relatively small cities of say 250,000 ranking no 1 should give you a pretty good flow of new clients. Back that up with Bing / Adwords in your local area and you should get a decent flow of new custom.

From there, do good work, charge a fair (But decent for you Too) price and become a good people person. These industries are full of useless retards who can bullshit like the best of them but never deliver. If you deliver on time, for a good price and are a decent guy your phone will never be quiet once people find out!

This. Too many morons do a bad job and give the rest of us a bad name. Please offer good service if you're going to be charging for it. Stick to your deadlines and promises, and you'll see a lot of return customers too.

To answer your question, why not go looking for the work? Signing up to a few freelancer sites, and getting automatic notifications is not a bad way to start.

$500 isn't enough money. if you're an web design agency, in my mind that means you have employees, an office, etc. I'm a 1 man team and I work from home and I charge $1500 MINIMUM for a 5 page site (all expenses included). Then again my designs are easily in the top 1% so I can charge quite a bit. I buy premium themes like avada, porto, salient etc then modify the fuck outta them so they look soooo good the client freaks out when they see it lol.

Edit: forgot to mention, you need to get some telemarketers cold calling businesses for you if you're launching a high volume web design company. also make sure you have some good services to upsell and try to pitch them autoresponder services where you can make some reoccurring affiliate monies ;)

Publish a guest post on popular web design blogs (there are many of them) and you'll get a few clients and steady traffic for a short while. To get ranked through SEO, target the low competition keywords that no one is fiercely competing for. There are many of them in every niche out there.

There is an old proverb :) if there is no need for bread why to open a bakery ? You should think a bit more about what you want to do. Targeting such a low community will just bring you to failure, you need to make your clients limits a bit larger (100km area maybe) then you'll start to understand something.

Local businesses are a good way to start. Go on Yelp and look through local businesses and see if they have a website or if they need improving. Once you talk to them from a business standpoint (ie. Having a good website is a strong marketing tactic to boost revenues), you are more likely to get business.

Just from my personal expereience I found that twitter advertising works well for getting web clients.

Also you could do a twist on the 7878 method - do some research into various niches in your area, find details of companies that either dont have a website or have a crap website and then send out some information about your services and the reasons why they are missing out by not having a website.

Certainly start with the local firms, Try focus on the very low competition businesses (even better if the owner does not even have a website to begin with) and just do a good job and charge what you think is fair. Although these type of business tend to over-pay for online services (in my experience a bar was paying £400 a month to a local firm for social media management!!) with a fair price and good service they may stick with you for the long haul - even if they give you minimul profits the word-of-mouth marketing could make it worth your while.
