I was told by google and a few other pieces of software that if i put adsense on my website for the particular niche i am doing, i should receive a few quid per click however all i'm getting at the moment is barely anything per click in comparison.

The adverts google have chosen for the site aren't usually related to the niche of the site so is that why the full price per click is not being obtained? If so then is there a way to get my adverts relevant to the niche of the site, or a way to just to get more money from my clicks in general?
    Cheers

Who told you that Google don't advert according to the niche? You will always get the related ads if your page is indexed.
and the main reason for which you are not getting the desired amount is that your niche is not that expensive :)

Goto Allow & block ads > Advanced settings > Product
Check "Ads based on user interest categories are allowed to show"
