Today, I was at the hockey arena and I got thinking about the ads on the boards. Today was a pretty popular game, probably about 200 people there which is pretty good size crowd for this league. It was game 7 (that means the series is tied at 3 and this is the final game) and they are a senior double A team, anyways back to the marketing. An ad on the boards costs around $1,000 per year. There are about 10 of the 20 spots filled on the side of the boards that everyone looks at. So I was wondering, if I put a banner there for free website, do you think I could generate some leads? You might have seen the thread about making money with free websites, and thats where I am going with this. I would need about 8-9 sales to pay off the yearly cost. I was also thinking the news paper. So many possibilities. What is everyones thought on this?

Honestly the only way to know is by testing. I would say try it out, but first I would try and negotiate the contract. I think doing it for a year might be too long. See if you can go monthly in which you can pull out if your ROI is not there.

There are so many forms of offline marketing you can do, but you need to test.

based on that, seems like it would work if:

you use a website domain name that is easy to remember and the ad stick in your head.

but it depends on what type of crowd go to those types of games :)

I will defiantly try for shorter contract.
I guess I will have to test.
And the crowd is everyone. There are drunks, old people, kids, business men, EVERYTHING. Go around north america, pick 200 random people and that is what you got here.

keep in mind you will have to pay for creating the banner board itself - don't think it will be cheap, will it?

I don't think a banner board would bring in direct results. They are better suited for branding your name.

I've had dozens of those types of banners up for my mainstream business and they never brought me direct traffic.

But whenever I would talk about my site to someone, they'd be like : Oh ya! I know that name!

It is a paper banner (I can design) and I will just hire someone to print and its just a poster that has Plexiglas over it I beleive.

Also, I understand what you mean about direct traffic now. Thanks for the opinion, I will defiantly try news paper instead.
