My website had only one page (the homepage)
I build a bunch of editorial backlinks to it, all legit, all white hat
    website moved to page 3
then, I added 20 more pages to the site, expecting it to move up because google hates one-page sites. but no, it went to page 8.
do you have any idea why this would happen? the 20 additional pages are 100% handwritten and not duplicate, but they don't add any value to the site, they basically say the same thing the homepage says but in different words. could I have gotten a thin content penalty?
or is this all the coincidence and the website was going to move to page 8 even if I hadn't added the additional pages?
if i add the website to webmaster tools (so that i can find out if there have been any manual actions), could just adding the website to webmaster tools cause a penalty?

I don't think added them to webmaster tools will cause any penalty. It seems like google already know about the pages anyways. If they don't add any value maybe they're just diluting the ranking of the main page, causes the decrease in over rank? I don't know if google actually does this though.

samcram, yes, clean domain with no history.
forethan, that sounds interesting. do you mind expanding on that? are you saying all the pages are targeting the same keyword so google is confused and doesn't know which one to rank?

There are many factors why your ranking drops down. If everything in your page is good, maybe some competitors just got outranked you. Google flux and the Algorithm updates have also something to do with the drop.
