does a link like, say San Diego <acronym title="California">CA</acronym> Tanning Salon

pass juice for both

San Diego CA Tanning Salon
-AND-
San Diego California Tanning Salon

-or-
would google be passing juice along for the <acronym> tag inside the <a> <acronym title= </a> etc?

wondering if I'm helping or harming myself by trying this and if I should stick to CA or California.. as an example.

Thanks!

In theory:
Google Caffeine is supposed favor micro-formats now... see microformats.org

<a ... class="abr"><abbr title="California" class="region">CA</abbr></a>

FYI: <acronym title="Internal Revenue Service">IRS</acronym>

Great, thanks - I'll leave the acronym tag for now.. appreciate the response!

It's possible that the algorithms may look at common abbreviations and tag them for keywords both ways. I would still suggest alternating it sometimes. If your anchor is always exactly the same then it doesn't seem natural. That makes it easier for the SE to identify it as part of your seo campaign. If you vary the anchors a little then there's a better chance the algorithms might see some of it as organic links.

Use CA in some, Calif in some, and California in some. There's a good chance that all of them will count for the same keyword, but the variation will make it seem more real. If your site were getting organic backlinks by fans of your website, they wouldn't always be using the exact same anchors.

Could be... I noticed yesterday while harvesting rss slugs that google was treating my CA keyword the same as California in some cases.

Thanks for the additional tips - I ask because someone recently gave me a directory type site related to my primary niche that has nice PR. The site is a dynamic PHP site so I decided to put a link to my money making site on the city and state levels (it has a dynamic page for every city and state in the USA) with the anchor text of city
<acronym title="[State]">StateAbbreviation</acronym>

The directory site doesn't get sh!t for traffic, so I just wanted to use it's authority to boost my main money making domain for my keywords, which are pretty much the same as the directory site... it was built from the same platform originally.
