I've been away from the forum for ~5-6 months, busy receiving my final credits for one of my bachelor degrees.

I recently became active in the forum again, and to my surprise, I had been given negative reputation. For what you may ask?

It seems, the user "BlackRat" had not necessarily agreed with my opinion about scamming, seen here: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/blackhat-lounge/279163-wake-up-call-read.html#post2510525

My comment was respectful, full of absolutely no insults, just sharing my opinion like the rest of us members. Blackrat thought that this deserved negative rep, for what reason?

Well, the comment under the negative reputation says "You are Blind"

This is what the negative reputation button is for?

Now, I sent BlackRat a private message stating that if he had a problem with my comment, to talk to me about it: don't give me negative rep.

    He responded:
"There there, added you another one. Happy now?

And please stop posting "thanks" or "thanks much appreciated" as it´s clearly stated in the rules that such acts tend to be seen as attempts to increase post count only, wheter be it or not what you are trying to accomplish. Such garbage add nothing to the forum as you may realize now.

    Mwahahahaha I abuse my power!"

He gave me an additional negative rep. What could the comment be this time?

"Use the thanks button, that's what its used for."

Now if Blackrat used his detective skills that he feels he has, he would've noticed that thanks was given via the button, and via a comment, in addition to +rep.

Here's what Blackrat gave me negative rep for..again:

Now it's not a HUGE deal that I've been given negative rep, because obviously I don't have a lot of rep, I have not been able to contribute enough information to really be given rep..prolly because I'm still a newbie. But it does bother me that negative rep is being given for such ridiculous reasons.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but negative rep is usually given to members that have caused problems, etc..and reputation is used as a guide to other users whether to do business with them or not..?

Yeah I shared my opinion about something awhile ago and received at least 5 minus reps just for stating an opinion, nothing to do with business. But just keep contributing and you'll get your rep back up. Mine was at 8 now it's 18. <3

I agree 100%. We're all here for the same reasons: to make money, to obtain information, and share information that will be helpful. So at the end of the day, reputation and the amount of posts I have don't matter, and I don't really care about.

But, when I see a thread about something that interests me, and I'm seeing all these different opinions, and I want to respectively share mine and then I see negative rep with the reason being "You are blind."...ya I'm going to have a problem.

And then When I confront him about it, he's going to give me negative rep for saying "thanks" on a thread that was giving away 10 free twitter accounts to the first 100 members? And I'm not going to have a problem with that?

BHW has been a great forum, and still is. It's full of a lot of great people that have helped me and thousands of others. And then there's a select flew who absolutely put a damper on that.

People reading the forums sometimes subscribe to threads. If they are taken to a topic because someone says "thanks," it wastes their time. Also, someone in a forum might have started an important topic, but it gets pushed down because of posts that don't add anything.

I don't care much about such things. Most of the long posts people make are a waste of my time, too, but I'm not going to negative rep anyone who disagrees with me. The issue with the thanks is that it's being considered spam. I'd probably agree with that, to be honest, but it's just my opinion.

I don't know how it could be done, but I'd love to see more locked topics. I'm always seeing someone offering free stuff. The post is dated months or years ago. The person has said they are out of items and/or hasn't posted in some time. Topic still gets posts constantly.

I'm sure there are various ways you could increase your rep if it's important to you. This is a blackhat forum, after all. Just go bully small children into creating accounts and giving you rep.

I would agree that there is a problem with useless posts, but my "thanks" post was written when the OP still had 500 twitter accounts to give away, so the fact that the thread got bumped wasn't a concern. I wouldn't write "thanks" on a thread from months and months ago for the exact reasons you've stated.

Regarding reputation, again, I honestly don't care.I just have a problem with users abusing the reputation function. I guess you could say this thread was created to help me vent my frustration.

BlackRat is going to do what he wants to do, so whatever. I now consider this whole problem a non-issue, and I can go back to being productive.

A moderator can delete this thread if they'd like, I don't really feel right talking about a user behind their back. My frustration has been vented, and the situation is over.

i agree with the op .. i received negative rep for not agreeing with other :)

probably would be best if negative / poitive rep would be given only on buy & sell threads

appreciation for what one is sharing is given through the thanks button, so no reason for rep button to be used on anything else than the market forum
