Well I was so seduced by the stats and bought it without even checking Google index.

    site:http://www.xyz.com gives no results. :(

Do you think I should bother trying to get it re-indexed by making a reconsideration request over the Search Console or I should just forget it?

I did the same mistake a couple of years ago. But I made a reconsideration request mentioning that I've just purchased the domain and confirming that I've tried my best to get the older (culprit) backlinks removed without any success. And within a couple of days (or 3 days, I don't remember), my domain was re-indexed.

Not being indexed in google doesn't matter AT ALL.

Google regularly removes expired domains from its listings, they're expired, thus no content on them, why would they stay in their listings?

Doesn't mean that they were banned, they were simply removed from the listings.

Although with that many links it's banned for sure

Probably not that good of a domain.

Don't even buy domains with sitewide backlinks

Meeh just drop it. Don't worry, you are not the only one, we all make such mistakes. :) I've bought like 5 such domains for my own needs until I've learned my lesson to check everything.

Fact that the domain isn't indexed doesn't mean it's not fine. However, if you got this for its registration price, then I can assure you, that the domain with that RD is most likely spammed beyond recognition.
