So I made a website around 3 months ago for Amazon affiliate. The keyword I found had 1,300 monthly searches for the main keyword in the US search engines. I decided to target it and rank for it.

After 3 months, I checked SEMRush and found that I'm ranking for 4 keywords in US Google but NOT for the main keyword. I'm only ranking for the really long tail keywords with 10 - 100 monthly searches. That pissed me off because I spent money on content etc for the site.

HOWEVER, I checked UK Google stats in SEMRush and I'm ranking #12 for the main keyword I'm targeting, and what surprised me was the searches for the keyword was waay higher at 3,200 monthly searches.

That's when I decided to update my website and target mostly UK visitors using UK amazon associates.
So far, rankings are stable and are improving.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming hosting location plays some degree of importance in the rankings of websites. My hosting for the site is located quite close (Leeds) so I'm guessing Google assumes my website would better suit UK visitors rather than the US.

Is there any advice anyone can give about ranking for US Google too?

Are you sending regional signals with lang, hreflang, or charsets? like hreflang="en-UK"? Or preferred region settings in GSC.

Hosting might not play as much a part as your TLD, are you on .co.uk site? I doubt hosting location will have too much influence in the ranking signals Google considers.

It's probably a behavioral signal. Your users likely come from these areas and so you rank there. Also hosting your site locally makes it faster, and speed is a factor.

Well done on the success of ranking your site. I would recommend looking into ego-location plugins to get the most out of your affiliate site.

Regarding Google country targeting, hosting location plays an important role, only second to the country TLD.
Since .com can be considered a generic TLD which frequently gets also used in plenty of other countries, the hosting location becomes even more important.

I know what I'm talking about since I have websites targeting Switzerland (German speaking) but with hosting in Germany.

Like user @validseo already suggested, in order to rank in google.com either set hreflang="en-US" in the header or define the target country in the Google search console.

host location does impact the ranking BECAUSE it directly affect the loading speed of your website, the faster your website load, the better your visitor experience and Google appreciate that, thus rank your site higher.
BUT host location's never the critical key to rank your website. Your website has not ranked simply because you do not push enough backlinks to it (I assume you already optimize on-page website). The competition in US market is always toughest, that's why you rank low in US but can rank lot higher in UK market.
