I am happy and sad both at the same time. My site finally ranks for a very popular, commercial keyword, 100,000 in searches per month at 10 in Google! But it is the scholarship page that was set up to sponsor scholarships to university students. It has no value for people looking to buy. It is the homepage we planned and worked towards ranking for that keyword.

If I were you, what would you do?

    - 302 Redirect to the homepage?
    - 301 redirect to the homepage?
    - Add a prominent CTA at the top of the page?
    - Do nothing and hope homepage ranks someday?
    -

    Thanks

301 redirect it to the home page is a better option than the others but if its a new site then it is probably in the sandbox, wait for sometime and the right page will rank by itself.

adding a prominent CTA would be better, you never know why is that page is ranking on that search term by doing any changes/redirect there is a possibility that the rank can drop or vanish from the face of earth. (happen to me a while ago)

Thanks for the suggestion, but the site has taken over a year to get here, so not exactly new.

I am worried about that myself, but doesn't usually the redirected to page take the position of the redirecting page?

Aim for relevancy and value for your visitors - not Google. If your page ranks high right now but it's completely irrelevant to the keyword's main topic, there's a huge chance it'll be kicked out of the rankings after some time because it offers no value to your site's visitors. They'll just bounce and there goes your ranking. Good luck. :)

Thanks for the replies, but I am still in the dark as ever, twiddling my thumb! This page apparently got ranked because it happened to attract some high quality .edu links. If I let it be, I am missing an opportunity. If I do something, I will be waiting on the knife's edge, wondering if something will happen.

I pondered over adding a CTA. But then, there remains the issue of having to change the Title and Description. It currently says it is a Scholarship page, so the CTR is pretty low by itself. If I add a CTA, it will not make much of a difference if I don't change the Title/Description. Ranking high need not always bring happiness :)

I would go with the 301 redirect for sure. Don't do a 302.

If you know that the .edu links are the reason it's ranking I'd suggest you go about trying to contact the webmaster of those .edu websites. Ask the webmasters to change the links to the more relevant page as it would offer greater value/relevancy to the visitors of their site.

Scholarship is the reason edu sites have linked to that page. For them it is THE relevant page. They see no reason to link to the homepage

Ah right... not an option so. The 301 passes link juice to the new page by the way. 302 won't as it's classed a temporary redirect rather than a permanent one.

I definitely would 301 it to the homepage.

if you 301 to the home page, probabily you may get the links removed, if that page rank high, should become powerfull, and pass good juice to your homepage too, use a CTA to funnel some people to the homepage togheter with juice, and try to use a a variation of the keyword, you want to rank..... for the home page.

I think, you don't need to do anything. If you will do anything with rank page, probably, you should kick from SERPs. If you want to take your visitor to the home page. Then use interesting popup. I think, it should be help for gathering visitors to the home page.

Don't 301 a page that is ranking. Add a CTA at the top of the page.

Make the 'correct' page relevant to that search term, and then do rel=canonical from the currently-ranking page to the page that you wish to rank instead.

Interesting, but to add rel canonical, shouldn't the content be broadly similar?

Agree with you there. However, all the inner pages link to the homepage, so isn't link juice already flowing to the homepage from this page?
