I'm trying to do some backlink research on a competing site and I'm wondering if there's a way of finding out if a site is using xrumer or scrapebox?

use Yahoo Site Explorer and look at their links, if they have spammy links then you have your answer

Or the paid version of Majestic SEO should show that. Even SEO Spyglass will do the trick.

Easy - look at the backilnks and look for the following

    1. A ton of profiles with the same links
    2. A ton of gibberish posts on forums or guestbooks with links
    3. Blog comments on pages with a ton of links and general comments like "I liked your post" or "I agree"

Thats are the three major signs.

Spyglass will show you if links are reciprocal or not, it'll show you what links come from different pages of one and the same domain, and lots of other stuff that helps you peep into competitor's link building tricks ;)
