A very interesting study with Squidoo that may affect other sites as well.

I've been doing quite a bit of testing with web 2.0s lately specifically Squidoo. I put up a Squidoo roughly 5 days ago and at first it wasn't ranking at all so I sent a scapebox blast to it.
I got it to the first page, but I noticed something quite strange. When I got it to the first page I figured hey, I might as well monetize it. So I added the amazon module to my Squidoo. Within a day my site was off page #1 again, in fact it was on page #3. So I went back re-adjusted my Squidoo and took down Amazon and sent another scrapebox blast. Within a day yet again I was back at #1.

So I figured hey maybe it was just dancing from the links I had just blasted to it. So I added the amazon module yet again. And bam less than a day later I was on page #5. I took down the Amazon later last night and now I'm back on page #1 again. Either Google hates Amazon modules on Squidoo or it's just a coincidence. I'm going to keep testing over time, but I just thought I would share this to some of the people trying to rank Squidoo lens.

You need a larger sample size to draw such conclusions.

Wait until position is same for whole week. Then add amazon. Wait another week after rankings stop changing....

If you come to same conclusion, you did successful case study :)

How many Amazon modules are you adding? How many affiliate links are you putting in each one? How many words does your Squidoo article have? You need to keep the text/affiliate links ratio high or else you will be seen as a thin affiliate page.

I have never had a problem ranking Squidoo pages but I don't use their Amazon modules because they take a huge chunk of the commissions. I use their big image module and link it directly too Amazon. You might want to give that a try.

Test it across more than a couple of lenses with the exact same process and you'd have something a lot more substantial.

This is interesting nonetheless! Thanks for sharing. :)

Don't the Squidoo guidelines prohibit this? If you've never encountered any problems then this is a great idea.

One of my competitors has a Squidoo page that has at least 25 Amazon affiliate links using thumbnails. I believe he's at #8. He also has a lot of those "Likes" (or whatever you call them at Squidoo) and replies.

I believe that one day, Squidoo will turn into what EZineArticles has become today.

Also, the dancing could have just been caused by adding that many more external links. Also, I've made Amazon sales from Squidoo, and they are worth pennies. Not worth it.

Nah, it's just some coincidence, fluctuation. I have tons (literally) of Squidoo lenses, all monetized with Amazon, and I'm not talking about 1-2 Amazon links. I have a few lenses that are nothing but Amazon modules and one meager text module. Not all are on first page of Goog. of course, but many are, and have been for months now.

Also on the 'adding that many links', I have a few tier 1 lenses that are nothing but collections of external links (lists of...xyz). Earning me quite a nice sum of money through tier payments and have lots of external visits as well.

Pretty sure your lens is just jumping on G. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the monetization.

I have seen my lens do the same thing without changing a thing to it and always keeping all of the modules included.

I don't think Google hates Amazon. Because I am using the Amazon product links along with Google adsense and they are running totally OK. so I think its Google dance. nothing else.
