To contribute to this forum I decided to attempt to summarize a portion of the research I have done today on finding a domain name registrar to do business with.
This post should prove useful for people new to this like myself.
Let's start with the super basics:
- What is a domain name?
It seems that the most basic answer to this question is: It's an ADRESS, it's your brand, your identity, it's how people find you.
- What is a domain name registrar?
A domain name registrar is a business that handles the reservation of domain names as well as the assignment of IP addresses for those domain names
- This post is me gathering some of my notes and trying to make sense of it.
- I spent around 6 hours today researching this topic, trying to find a domain registrar that fits my needs. It was very frustrating, it seems this area of business life is also infested with sharks.
Go search online for ''best registrar'' or whatever search term, and you'll see it's almost all affiliates trying to earn money.
(i got laughed at for spending all this time researching to decide by a person in a thread I started earlier today, which is fair, but only partially fair)
Here is the reason why it's only partially fair for me to get mocked under the guise of 'being helped'
1. To choose a domain name registrar, you need to know what you need from it. What type of services are they offering?
I had to deep dive into the topic to even learn enough about the topic
to EVEN IDENTIFY MY NEEDS
After reading the domain registrar horror stories, with poor technical support, and especially a few about people getting their domains hijacked, by others, or even by their own fucking registrars!
Some lost their hard work, their livelihoods!!! , some couldn't do business for many weeks, which is a huge dent.
So spending all these hours researching, improves my chances of
1. not losing my business
2. wasting less time in the future (technical support if required)
Here are some registrars
GoDaddy 1/5
This one seems to be the most mainstream, but also the most cursed.
PorkBun 4/5
Seems decent - Currently the one I am most likely to work with
Cloudflare 4/5
Seems decent, I think this might be my second choice, perhaps.
But I read somewhere that in the WHOIS they show the location of the person?
Like the province and city of the person who registered. I don't know enough about this yet.
NameCheap 4/5
Seems decent
NameSilo 4/5
Seems decent
EasyDNS ?/5
This one seems legit, but also kinda shady.
Not sure how to classify this one. If anyone got experience with them, please let me know.
I haven't been able to find about much about them. Their blog is was an interesting read though.
So my main concern right now, is not even choosing a domain registrar, but it's to properly identify my needs.
1. A company that wont hijack my domain name ideas
2. ????A company that has WHOIS Privacy Protection???? (I need to look into this concept more, I dont fully understand it yet but I do know I need it)
3. A company that has good customer support
After this I'm going to have to research webhosting *sigh*
Thanks for reading
