Its probably something you have all heard before, but its about how you place adsense ads to give you the most revenue without making the site look horrible and spammy.

I WAS using the the old tried and tested ad layouts:

You have probably seen this picture before a million times, and I thought it was the best way to lay out my ads. But I was only achieving 6-11% CTR, which is not bad.

This is how I laid out my ads (in blue):

But I decided to do some A/B split testing on different ad layouts.

So I chnaged my website to look like this:

And look how my CTR changed from lower numbers above the orange line, and below.

I believe this is down to how 'new' style websites have changed how we look at them. Often these days you have a large header banner which is designed to give short information or deals, so people now look at this first and click on something they like. Whereas the old style websites which those heatmaps are based on, do not have this large header and are very content orientated. So now I have converted all my websites to a modern design, and switched the header banner with adsense. This means my earnings have just tripled overnight.

nice , i will definitely try something like this. its 3 big rectangles instead of a long thin leaderboard then?

btw.. isn't 20% CTR massive? I am usually betwee 5-10% and I believe a too high CTR can get your adsense account banned (i'm just repeating what I heard)

As long as the traffic is legit and it converts, I can't see this being a problem.

Well I'm not doing anything against the TOS. So I can;t see myself being banned. All links are whitehat, content is 100% unique readable, I have a lowish bounce rate. But yes, 3 large boxes works MUCH MUCH better than the banner ad.

Didn't Google release a update targetting too many ads above the fold? How long will your site last like that?

I think it's two big rectangles and a small one in the middle.

It has to do with serps and not being against Adsense TOS. If you have to many ads above fold, then they think your site is spammy or whatever and could/will cause you to lose rank

It won't get your account banned, but you can lose rankings & traffic.

Incase your traffic relies on SEO, make sure you read everything related to the ads-above-fold update of Google. Otherwise, this seems like a brilliant move.

Did you use 2 text ads and 1 image ad on purpose?

I know this may sound dumb, but may I still ask if this is on a wordpress site or html? I ask because I am just wondering how you placed 3 ad boxes in the header. Besides, if it is wordpress, then surely not everytheme will have that provision, No? Sorry but I am not a techie at all
    Thanks for answers

Ardley , It's always nice sharing tricks and optimization, but I can see that you have put the adds exactly under your main navigation bar, I hope it's not a drop down menu, because if it is one then you are probably just having tooo many invalid clicks.

Shows how important it is to experiment with ad positions - I have done similar things in the past and achieved massive CTR increases as well.

I used this layout for a long time! I can atest it does work. But in my experience it depends on the site....on one site this layout did not improve anything for me so I went back to the hot spots map, sidebar, center, etc.

Also: if you do this, you may want to remove image ads, as it'll look like a large menu and CTR may improve lots. Three image ads blinking and spinning will make your page look like spam.
