How effective are links used in signatures on web forums in terms of backlinking?

I'm just now trying to get into SEO, and I know next to nothing, but I was curious about this as one way to create backlinks.

    Thanks.

They are effective. However, get your link inside a body of text if you can.

What do you mean? Like, make sure it's a link connected to text and not an image?

Effective but only if you do it properly, otherwise chances are they will only be temporary.

And links in the body of a post (anchor text) are more effective then links in the signature of a post (especially if the sig link is a banner not a text anchor link). As the search engines will trust that your forum post is trying to be relevant, whereas your sig link is clearly just an attempt to drive traffic (if not blatant serp manipulation).

So the links in the post are better than links in signatures.

    Thanks!
