When getting domains for your PBN, how important is it that the domain be relevant to your niche?

Do this really matter or not?

Yes, it's important. For example if you have an article on a site about travel and the link says "better travels" and it links to another travel site, that's more important to Google than an article on a site about cars, linking to travel.

Relevancy is important, but it's not the end of the road.

It's getting more and more important, with google getting smarter about deindexing PBNs and devaluing their links, especially those based on expired domains. While you can still rank with links from non -related PBNs, the future is not very rosy with general purposes PBNs. Some people switched completely to niche only PBNs, other linger with a mix of general and niche PBNs, while other completely disregard the relevancy, because it still works. But for how long, we don't know yet.

What about .xyz domains or .travel domains? Will they still work?

    General PBNs still work.

I look at niche relevancy as an added bonus.

    Lets take an example:

What if my business is a online harware store and I get a domain about landscaping, or roofing etc. They all tie in

    Or

I have a wedding business. I get a domain that is about photography, cakes, dresses or clothes, etc. They will be sort of relevant right or does the domain need "wedding" in the name or "hardware" etc

Domains relevant to your niche is an advantage to your PBN but there are irrelevant domains that can outrank relevant sites if you employ all the techniques in building PBN.

Your overall point makes sense, and seems like the logical progression of things.

Having said that, regarding non-related PBNs, the only question would be if the link from a given site seems "natural" to that site and the target site.

If all the sites within a PBN are not related to a niche, but all the links provided are "natural", then there ought to be no problem.

But, to do all this requires some good planning and work. For instance, links of the same nature (e.g. keyword targets) dripped exactly 30 days apart doesn't seem natural. A niche site receiving a disproportionate share of their links from unrelated sites doesn't seem natural. Unrelated sites that have a large proportion of their links going to unrelated sites (i.e. your niche site) seems unnatural. Etc., etc.. These are all things G could scan for and flag.

So, if you are saying people who lazily construct their PBNs are going to get nailed sooner or later. Yep!

contextual domains should you your first preferences, if you cant find them or the cross your budget the next best option would be generic ones
