This is a thread to detail my current website project.

    A bit about me,
    A bit about me,

Unlike a lot of people here who start journey threads, I've actually had some success with internet marketing in the past. Back when you couldn't move for content-locked websites (about 2010-2011 I think) I made a bit of money with content lockers. Not sure how much exactly without looking but my historic earnings on one network are over ten thousand dollars, to give you an idea.

Here's the catch... I was young and dumb and really lucked my way into making money by uploading videos with a link to a content-locked page. It didn't take much smarts. But a Youtube was set-up back then in such a way that you could rinse and repeat (or automate it as I did) and you couldn't really fail. Being young and dumb as I was, I really took the situation for granted and would lounge around all day.

Anyway, Google really changed things around at some point. They kept brandishing the ban hammer. We played more than a few rounds of whack-a-mole. And after a while I was spent. They got too smart and my accounts and videos (and earnings by extension) slowly dried up.

It's a couple years later and I come back a couple years smarter and more driven. I've worked in an office. Had good experiences but really not for me. I realise now what I had and what I could have again (and more of) if I play my cards right.

I've always kept a close eye on the world of internet and affiliate marketing (but made excuses and was too worn out at the time to maintain any projects) and now I'm ready to have one last hurrah. My immediate goal is to make $500 a week. I don't necessarily need to make that much to continue down this path but that's the marker for now.

So, I'll bring you up to speed on the project while being vague.

    • I've created a website in a high competition niche. Affiliates and affiliate networks in the industry generally work on an on-going rev share basis although some CPA models are available.
    • The website will feature product reviews as well as how-to and informative pages/posts, ie. "which x lets you do y" type pieces
    • In the past week I created the website, wrote 20 plus pages (about 25,000 words without counting) and optimised it as best I know how
    • The website is a uk one and will target primarily British users on mobile devices. This may change in future
    • Most of the website has been indexed by Google
    • So far I've made the grand sum of zero and have had about 1 genuine visitor.
    • I plan to add one to three pages to the website each day

I'll regularly post my activities in this thread to hold myself accountable and provide running updates on rankings, earnings and so on.

So it's day 2 and the website has been indexed by Google and Bing for the most part. Each page on the site targets several low volume keyword clusters, mainly. Bing and Yahoo are ranking some keywords quite high but with low search volume and those search engines having limited use I've not seen much in the way of traffic.

Yesterday I also created some social media profiles. I've followed around 100 people and woke up to 31 followers. Not too bad. Most of those are fake profiles or people promoting their own links/websites but I'm not going to worry too much about that right now.

I've also received my first visit via search engine and Google Analytics is starting to log search engine impressions:

    SearchImpressions.jpg

I have some different positions for some decent terms. I'll carry on as normal. Still waiting for Google to do the dance. Not sure how long that usually takes?

For the record, this is a white hat project. I'll mostly focus on fresh content, social channels and natural link building.

My check-list for today is to:

    • Follow 100 more people on Twitter and favourite roughly the same number of tweets
    • Share 6 of my website pages on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ (2 on each)
    • Create 5 boards on Pinterest and add roughly 50 pins to each.
    • Add 2 new pages to the website

Sorry. I can't answer the question because every other word in the dictionary triggers some forum banned list

No is the short answer. Yes is the long answer. I may make some down the line but only to improve the user experience on my website, not necessarily to bring traffic

So yesterday was Father's Day, which I didn't know at the time of writing this. It meant I had to abandon the PC for a good while. I managed to follow the above amount on Twitter and managed to get 1 new page live before realizing it was Fathers Day so not too bad.

I'm still not getting any genuine traffic to my website to my knowledge. I think mostly all of it is coming from robots and stuff. I can't say 100% but the average visit duration is 0:0:0 and I keep getting about 25-30 visits at the exact same time all from Mac devices every day. It's taking my bounce rate up to 100% so I hope search engines don't read too much into it so early on.

Today I'm going to add one or two more pages and focus on building my Pinterest profile a little.

I've also identified an issue with my h1 and h2 tags that needs addressing. (accidentally wrapped some images in h1 and h2 tags)

    Subbed mate!

I am just starting out on a new site too. It's in a competitive niche, but I just bought a pack of 'low competition keywords' from a vendor on here. I only have 5 articles up so far. I HATE writing articles, but I don't have the money to outsource .. Bummer!

My plan is to add about 100,000 words before I do a single piece of link building.

My SEO plan is basic. I will build a bunch of web 2.0's and let them age while I do the content .. Scheduling 2 articles per week to the Web 2.0's to keep them fresh. After I hit 100,000 words, I will start linking and building a second tier.

For the keywords which are ranking, but not near the top, I will just be doing some competitor link analysis, and 'stealing' their backlinks so to speak.

Overall goal is to have at least 100 articles ranked in the top spots by Christmas, and to be earning at least a few hundred quid per week by next March.

I don't know if this is a reasonable goal, as I have never built a site like this, but only time will tell.

I look forward to your updates! Good luck

Sounds a bit similar to my plan. I'm aiming for 1-2 articles a day (1,500-3,000) words. I'll be writing them myself. I know it's going to get boring so I'll probably launch a second website in a completely different niche to keep things less repetitive. Writing two articles on roughly the same topic every day can be a pain but I figure writing 1 for each less so. Either way I want 100,000 words on the main website by August.

Once the 100k is hit I will slow down on new pages and add fresh content to already indexed pages and do some selective re-writing. My intuition is that if I'm reviewing products and services, it will be beneficial to show Google that the pages haven't been forgotten and are still relevant and updated with new information where necessary.

I have a few web 2.0 properties (newly created and without domains at this stage) and will update them semi-regularly. I need to look into this more before paying it any real mind.

I'm also going to be looking at competitors backlink profile but I think I'll only use it as a rough guide as what I've seen so far isn't spectacular. I'm confident I can get more relevant and higher quality backlinks but it's early days.

Good luck with your journey and let's get this money

    Yes! Let's get it ...

What did you do for Keyword research? Did you outsource, or do it yourself? Are you targeting the lower comp keywords, or just going with whatever comes to your head?

I'm doing the keyword research myself. Trying, anyway. For the most part it's fairly straight forward because I'm going after specific products. I seem to be ranking better initially for list articles though, ie. what xxxx lets you do yyyyy. Understandable as they have less competition.

Pretty much all of the main keywords are medium to high competition but within the content I'm using some longer tail lower competition keywords. Some of them more than others depending on the popularity of the product. I'm basically working in keyword clusters. For each page I will be actively tracking 5-10 keywords.

I'm using free tools at this stage for keyword research, like Google Keyword Planner and Keyword S h i t e r

I need to brush up on my keyword research skills if I want to make anything of this. Only problem I ab bumping into is judging whether it's really worth going for. More of a confidence thing over anything.

Anyway, best of luck dude. Drop me your Skype in a PM some time. It's always good to connect with people on the same journey

One of the things I'm doing to decide whether I can rank for a keyword is to look for the keyword footprint on pages that are ranking on the first and second page. Is the keyword in the title, meta description or page URL? Is it a h1 or h2? Is it in the content, specifically the opening and closing sentence? do any images on the page have the keyword as the file name or alt tag?

I don't expect to rank for any of the main keywords for each page for a good while but I'm expecting to rank for longer phrase searches that I'm not actively targeting just on the strength of having so much unique content. As my website ages, Google sees I'm constantly updating and maintaining the site, sees I have active social presence, and I get some backlinks in place, then I should start competing for the main terms in 3-6 months time. I'm at a disadvantage to start with because my domain is new.

    I'll shoot you a PM.

Okay. So today I've added two new pages of content and I've also created a few Pinterest boards and added some pins. I almost didn't survive Pinterest - that place is like a blackhole of amazing content. Need to be careful not to get addicted and keep it professional when using it ha

I'm getting some half respectable visibility scores on Rank Track but these are skewed a little by Bing ranks. Still nothing on page 1 of Google and a heck of a lot of keywords aren't in the top 50 at all for Google which is expected at this stage.

So Google doesn't like me much at the moment but to be expected. List of tracked keywords growing by about 10-20 a day at this stage. By this time next month I should have 250-350 keywords I'm actively watching and indexed for.

I think I'm going to go through with creating a second website. A change of pace. I can see myself getting bored if I'm writing 2-3 pieces a day that are very same-same. I think 1 article of at least 1,000 words for 2 very different websites, maybe even 3, will have me working much more productively. So over the course of the next week I'll work in the background to populate a new site in a new niche.

On the plus side I'm now at over 50 followers on Twitter and getting some retweets and favourites (I suspect these are automated but I'll take it). Not using any tools at the moment. If anyone has any to recommend that are free I'm all ears.

    Earnings: 0

Had a bit of a slow day yesterday. Got one piece of content live. Will add another one or two today. Still quietly working on the background on getting a second site built - 2 pages created so far. Signed up for a few affiliates.

Today I'll fix the h1 issue I was having. Below is the average ranking position (steadily rising in Bing/Yahoo and doing opposite in Google). The other graph is daily visits via search engine. The search terms I'm trying to rank for are not particularly high volume - the highest would be in the mid thousands. I'm not expecting that much traffic from search engines. 100-500 visits a day I estimate would put me in good stead to hit my target. So a lot of work to be done but very achievable if I can curry Googles favour. As mentioned before, I have about 120 keywords at the moment but should have a few hundred more tracked by August. There are several money pages/keywords I will go after more aggressively in time.

    25th.jpg 25t.jpg

I'm getting a fair bit of junk referral traffic. Will this play a role in how Google judges the website and is there a way to disassociate myself from it if so?

I now have 10 pinterest followers and 100 followers on Twitter. I'll look into instagram and google+ later in the week.

I had a good session in Rank Tracker this evening and my on-page optimization scores are generally better than what the competition are putting up. Hitting around 80-95% scores. The good news is a few sites I'll be competing for rank with aren't all that old.

About half the main competition are between 8 months to 2 years old and have low PR pages and domains.

If I can match them with some quality backlinks and social signals I should be able to start challenging for the big keywords in 4-8 months time. In the meantime it will be a case of waiting for Google to get me page 1 positions for some of the lower volume and longer tail terms. I'll start some light link building in a few weeks.

Fixed the h1 issue and added a new page.

Visibility has climbed slightly but search engine referrals are still near non existent.

Thanks bro. Not expecting results over night so not going to be the most glamorous or exciting of journeys but fingers crossed I can demonstrate that a little patience and hard work pays off.

    26th.jpg

I don't really know much about bing and yahoo but the initial rankings seem a lot stronger. Anyone know if I should expect those to drop off the face of the earth in the next few weeks before bouncing back up and settling?

Today I plan to add another page to Project 1 and try to crack 200 followers on Twitter.

I'll also create 2 pages for my second project and find a theme for it and generally get it ready to transfer from localhost to an actual host. The second website is going to be in the charity niche. I won't say much more but once I have 5 main content pages (I currently have 2) and my about, privacy, home, terms and conditions and contact I will go live. I feel like there's a lot more room for traffic building on social channels and easily attainable free quality backlinks with Project 2. Traffic also peaks heavily in November and December (Christmas) so I don't want to launch too late. I should have the website live by the end of the month.
