I have a huge idea to start a big social networking site that can compete with facebook, twitter, and the others. I just need to know, where do i start? I have no idea how to code. I was thinking about getting people to do it for me. Either that or im going to take a few months to learn coding on my own. I have exactly how i want everything to go. This site that i want to make is good because no one has done it before. I also need to think of a domain name. Anyway this thread is basically about some of the basics i need to start a big site. You may think making a site is hard but it really isnt. I just dont possess the skills needed to make one.

Before you start anything, you should first make sure you have already mapped out how you are going to get people to come and interact with your site. If you dont have this already mapped out building all the rest is a waste of time, money and effort.

Do not take offense to this, but I can't tell you how many people (friends, family, business partners) that come to me with those exact same words. First, you need to vette your idea through trusted sources that have experience with start-ups. Look for local entrepreneurial mentors in your area before you marry your idea and waste a bunch of time on something that is not going to be successful.

After you've done that ... you will need to create a project brief, and find a developer to work with for a proof of concept. After you have a POC then you want to look at groups like y combinator that can give you true startup guidance.

First thing i want to say is not to underestimate the amount of time, money and man hours it takes just to build a decent social network or service.

First step is to get quotes from developers to have a solid idea of how much it's gonna cost you. If it's within your budget, go for it. Just don't mortgage your house or anything.

If you want to do it yourself, start by asking questions on technical forums, decide which languages and development route to take, learn programming and give yourself 2-3 years to build it.

And don't overlook all the other aspects like web servers, databases which can get really complicated, UI and UXD.

Last thing is, if you thought about it, it's already out there in 1 form or another. Drupal, wordpress and other cms platforms are powerful enough to build just about anything you can dream of. Do your research well and you will find it.
