Anyone tried promoting your website this way, is it effective?

Nope never tried but id your website is related to your audience then it can work.
Like the streamers and gamers do.

But it can really vary with your niche.

I have done it before. Could not tell you how effective it was. But I suppose every little helps.

I am trying to get people to my graphic design/writing/animation services site. My videos aren't related to this so I don't know how it would go

I would have a call-to-action every minute or so come up in the corner of the screen then. Something like "Graphics provided by: company name & website" or something along those lines. Also, feel free to have a quick 5 second clip at the beginner of your video- everyone on YouTube is in the graphic design niche by default, thumbnails, banners, etc.
