So I have been on BHW for 8 years now. I , like many, have had their ups and downs. I have been around since the beginning when FB ads were flyers and when people were still making MFA sites. I have seen so many people come and go in this business and in fact not many of the people I used to go to summits with aren't even in the business anymore. I myself rarely go to adtech or aff summits anymore as I have 5 children. I still hang on to the good ole days.

This has in some ways held me back. I am now considered an old man in affiliate marketing as I have hit the ripe old age of 38. Getting trapped in the past hurts your thinking as you are always finding yourself chasing the old methods. Now some are still working, but not many. I am giving a warning to all of the younger class out there. Make sure to evolve your methods as you grow or you will find yourself in a way of thinking that you are trapped in.

The problem you have is that once you make money you want to repeat the methods. The internet evolves and so do the rules. Hell, for those of you that know the biz you remember the hayday of rebills. I built flogs like there was no tomorrow. Then onto downloadable toolbars. Those were a goldmine at one point. But as you know changes happen. What once was allowed is no longer allowed. There is a constant battle between affiliate marketers, advertisers and search engines. This will go on forever. I started my first online marketing campaigns in 1999 way before social media and when Ebay was still done with no credit cards by a handshake. LOL

So what is the difference in Whitehat, Greyhat, and Blackhat SEO? The answer depends on when you asked. Many things that are considered blackhat today were whitehat years ago. What changed is how Google and other search engines perceive them. They have unleashed a barrage of techniques to hurt affiliates over the year and named them cute little animal names. Most of what you hear is BS online today.

So the best advice I can give all marketers is that noone really knows what they will do next but rest assured, if something is working great today, be ready to evolve tomorrow. Never settle for just ONE thing. You have to have multiple strategies in place just in case that one method you use doesn't work tomorrow. Never stop evolving. Never stop coming up with new ideas. Never Give up on your dreams. The goal is to make money and to succeed. You will succeed if you always pay attention to the changing trends. And to be honest, I belong to so many forums, and this one, the BHW community is the only one you will find some honesty in. I have made a lot of money over the years and I have probably lost even more with trying different advertising methods. I have learned to not lose as much as I used to. If something is not working anymore just stop the insanity and move on. Read the forums and see the hidden gems that are still out there. Use the methods you see are still active but add in your own twist. When doing SEO dont be lazy and just spin the crap out of something that is not readable at all but do the extra work of taking 5 minutes to read the article you spun just to make sure it is at least somewhat readable. By taking a few extra seconds of your life you will see your efforts will pay off. When you see a tool that works use it but dont let that be your only weapon. I used to use GSA a lot but now for tier 2 to my money sites I use only Ranker X. Both are good tools but RankerX is definite my favorite.

EDIT- "LOL Since I have been accused of this being a ad for RankerX which I have no affiliation with let me list for you services I think are amazing in BHW that I use regularly and in my opinion are the best of the best here on the forums.

So I am going to end my overly long post now and wish all the marketers in here the best. Read the BHW forums and pay attention to the posts and replies. Never Give Up and Always Evolve!

It was great, til the part of pointing RankerX links to the money site, talking about spun garbage yet pointing automated links directly to money site. Sorry to say but this is obviously advertisement for RankerX

I don't go direct with money site with anything that is spun. Let me clarify for you as I obviously misspoke. Tier 2 Links. :) First of all I have nothing to do with RankerX at all but I do see a difference in results with them compared to GSA. If my opinion of the products have offended you I apologize for that. I was just giving that as an example. I can go on to all the tools I have used, most of which don't exist anymore. Example, Scrapebox used to have many purposes over the years and still does but I have changed strategies and what I use the tool for now is much different.

I wish I would had started when I was a teenager, but better late than never. In the short 3 years that I've been dealing with IM I've seen so much stuff going on. And you are spot on, if you don't constantly evolve you are dead on the water.
I've had methods work for just a couple of months and then an update happens and it sends everything to the shitter, but there will always be another way. As companies get more and more strict you gotta do things better and better. There is no other way than up.
I hope to still be around 10 years from now, as I love IM and the magic of it all.

I wish I would have learned as early on as you did in my career. I look at it this way. Affiliate Marketing, as all other types of marketing will always be around forever. The entire world is based on ads. Unless you live in a rural area you cant walk out your door without seeing ads everywhere. Billboards, Doctors offices, Stores, Bowling alleys, online everywhere. The entire world's economy depends on marketers and marketing. Without it there would be no brands, no trade. So by adapting marketers will always have a job and a future. Good luck going forward and enjoy your next 10+ years!

Well, the basics are the same: Find a problem, fix it and find the people that have the problem.

It's just the "methods" that change, everything else is business as usual.

Thanks for the share and the read. Having also been a member for 8 years I can certainly relate to good times and bad times. I'm now just getting things stable and am fairly happy with where I'm at. I'm working on a long term project (5 - 10 years) that will hopefully pay off in the long run, it's just about building a brand and trust over time, no short cuts at all. Good luck to you!

Thanks for putting this dude. Was a great read.
For a guy just starting out, what would you recommend(or rather give your thoughts on) ,an average stable job or being an IM based on these four parameters:freedom ,happiness, money, long term...
