700k p/v day, 125k unique visitors per day. What can I do?

I am part of a very popular website that receives 700k page views per day, around 125k unique visitors.

We are rank <5000 in the US, similar ranks for AU,NZ,UK. Our primary traffic is typed in and Google. Most of you reading this thread will have visited us or heard of us.

I am curious as to how much money can be made through this site via ads. Only problem is, we have similar content to chan sites and a lot of networks would probably deem us 'racist / hate-mongering' etc.

You best bet if you have that much traffic... is to contract company out that acts like the middle man and sells the ads for you.....

You can try CPA... but selling ad space is much easier and profitable.

Our site is pretty much a household name to internet veterans. I'd even consider selling it if someone made a good enough offer. We have sat next to moot at panels/conferences. Same kind of internet culture website.

you know the easiest way to find out is to go to other popular chans and see what they are doing. Thats just for starters, everyday you don't monetize is a day your throwing money away. So now that you have some monetization on your site analyze your traffic and find CPA offers that will convert well and sell ad space.
 
If your website is so popular why are you selling it here? Put it on Flippa. If it really is popular, you might find some nut who'll pay you seven figures for it.

You could just directly sell ad space. I'm sure if you had an approved thread here people would hand over a chunk of money just to see if your traffic converts.
 
We've made $100 from adultfriendfinder in like 6 hours, I was hoping for a little more than that though.
 
Network ad sales for a site like Encyclopedia Dramatica are going to be pretty much a no go. You made $100 from AFF in 6 hours which you're not happy with; so it'd also be good if you could call out a marker for how much you'd ideally like to make.

700k page views a day is a lot of impressions, but with your niche, you're not going to pick up a decent eCPM running ads on a CPM basis.

Having browsed on ED a couple of times before for the lols, I'd generally assume the audience to be of a younger age (14 - 26?), who are relatively intelligent (since the basis for much of the site is sarcasm, and taking the piss out of topics in general), so you need to find something that fits the mark.

Mobile PIN submits would be great, but I feel that your audience wouldn't be stupid enough to complete a quiz and text a number to "Win an iPhone 4s", and if retention is a key thing, it would be a dis-service to them.

You might also want to consider how far away you'd be willing to move from the current Wiki format, if at all, or whether you'd be up for using modal (in content pop-up) boxes, new window pop-ups, etc, to run ads in a more prominent place.

I realize this isn't a really well structured reply, but hopefully you'll find something useful.

It's the best reply I've received yet. It seems our best bet is to run our own ad server, which none of us have any experience in doing. Would you be willing to help us out and take a cut of the profit for a while? We are looking to hire marketing staff that can manage that side of things for us. Servers and stuff don't matter, ED is ran on an army of servers at the moment.

Maybe you could try adfly. With that number of visitors you could earn a lot of $$$. 1k US visitor = $4 x 700k = $2,800/day :D

affiliates programs
just sell ad space .. targeted by news/location/niche/event...
sell links
try sign up with every program out there that accept your site and randomly show up their advertisements ? in a month you will have good knowledge..
aswell use some program to analyse where & why peopel click so you can see winners and loosers if you got so mad traffic its worth to put all your efforts for 3 months tests.
