I have quite a bit of spare time each day and was recently thinking of ways to earn some money in that period. I have a passion for football, in particular Chelsea FC and was thinking of starting a blog website that covers the latest news regarding the club as well as providing match reports and tactical analysis. At least 3 articles will be posted a day and they will be high quality ones.

Hypothetically, if I was getting 50 thousand visitors a month to the website, with 50% of that traffic being from the UK/US how much would I get from Adsense if I had three ads on every page in good positions.
Do you think Affiliate marketing would be a better monetization method, with it being football related maybe sport betting offers could be good?

I know there are many variables and I don?t expect a definitive answer but some estimates would be appreciated as I don?t have any experience in making money this way.

It depends, which niche is it and what kind of keywords do you have?

all I can tell you is that this guy: http://goonernews.com/ pays around 1k pounds/month to his content writers so I guess he is making much more than that :)

Thanks man, interesting stuff. I've just checked their website out on a traffic estimation site, they seem to average around 180k traffic a month.

Just out of interest, how do you know he pays that much to his writers? Also, do you mean 1k to each of his writers or 1k split between them.

It really depends a lot of the site, the cost per click, what type of traffic, ect. I have some sites that get 5k visitors a month and make $2k a month but then I have sites with 20k visitors and makes $200 a month.

Sure, you can make some money using adsense in your blog, but with this kind of niche i would rather go with promoting betting sites with payouts like 20-200$ or 20-40% rev share.
Selling fotball/chelsea related products could also be a good bet. Chelsea store is accepting affiliates (low 5% commission though)

Since you have a passion about this niche and running a blog is pretty much free, just go ahead and start it up, write some content, get visitors and test different monetizing methods and focus on the one which makes you the most $$$.

If your users are people who bet on soccer matches then there's tons of money to be made. They pay money to bet on games so they obviously have money. Review different bookies and insert your affiliate link on them. Then profit. ;)

Traffic estimation websites are not very accurate.
One of my content writers worked for them for around 16 months and he knew most of the internal kitchen of the projects. It was 1-1.2k for all the writers.

Such websites with news and interesting/engaging content could make lots of traffic quite easily with proper Social media presence.

I would suggest you to test the monetization out. I don't have any adsense projects, and can't say how much you might be making, but from my spendings on adwords with football related websites, I can tell you the CPCs are high.

What I would recommend you is to sell your premium traffic to media buyers and agencies at a good CPM. You can list high prices for CPM, as your traffic will be very targeted, but you also MUST leave a phone so that agencies and serious buyers can call you. If somebody calls you for advertising, and they mention they are a direct response agency or something like that, you must give them cheaper prices as they might be buying from you for a long time. Most of the serious buyers will definitely do a test buy to see how your traffic converts. If it works well for them, they will keep on buying.

Then split test your remnant inventory between affiliate offers and Google adsense, and see what works best. If you give Google enough information, and you come up with some good placement, they can optimize your ads in a way that you only get very relevant ads, this will result in more money for you. On the other hand, sportsbook affiliation is a very lucrative form of business that can really work well.

Another plus for google adsense is that there are many media buyers in the Google Display Network, who only use the display network to test out websites. Which means they can buy some of your ad inventory from the display network, and if your traffic works for them, they will be likely to get in touch with you for direct to site buys. This way you both skip the middleman and make more money.

    Good luck!

lol, why does it sound like I'm trolling? I said I'm not very experienced in this type of money making so I thought I'd ask the question on here because I know plenty of people make good money from adsense on BHW.

Why does it seem funny, are you always this condescending?

Great post man, its given me plenty to think about. I'm definitely going to do some split testing to see what works best.

I run a site very similar to the one you're considering, about a different club though. I only run it as a hobby so I'm not fussed about making money from it, but of course being into IM I've tried to monetise it as best I can.

From my personal experience display advertising just doesn't pay in this niche - either Adsense or affiliate banners - with 40k uniques & 150k pageviews display is only pulling in about $60 per month (and no this isn't down to ad placement or any other issues like that, I know what I'm doing and make good money off sites in other niches). Best payers for me have been gambling affiliate links in posts with betting tips & link sales (you'll need to build a good link profile before selling links though). Affiliate programs for buying shirts can make some alright money but only for a couple of weeks after the kit launch, interest dies down very quickly. Same goes for the yearly releases of the FIFA & Pro Evo console games. Never made a penny off ticket sales affiliates despite getting a very high CTR, the extortionate prices they charge means the conversion is incredibly low.

    Hope this helps :)
