After a chat with the pastor of our church, looks like someone built their site and is charging them 500 dollars per year for "maintenance" to the site...No SEO work or anything, just hosting and really nothing else.

Really frustrated... its a pretty sad looking site and they are totally being ripped off.

No real point here except just don't rip people off like this guys... not good business. Trying to not be vindictive and blast the heck outta this dude's site in response.

I had something similar happen at a church in my town that I would go to the youth weekend activites. They found out that I could design a website pretty well, and gave me 50$ for doing the site. Which I didn't care, I just wanted to save them 250$ a year for "maintenance".

Are you more concerned because Church is involved here ? At least he is better than scammers, he gave a price and the buyer agree to it.

Is that in addition to hosting costs? $500/yr works out to about $42/mo. If it's hosting it may be a bit high, but not unheard of.

I have done church sites for free in the past just for the link and a little free word of mouth. The bad part about deals like this is that if they stop paying the agency, they have no idea how to pay for their domain and may end up loosing it. Have seen that happen too many times.

well we had someone come to us - a web design company had sold them a thesis site with no customization - just a plain site with a header and they charged them $1600 .. I just said look you got ripped off the template is like $77 and maybe $200 is what you should have paid for it.

some people have no idea on this kind of stuff..... what can you really say.

Ya, the church really had no idea how much stuff should cost. I'm just upset that someone would use that to totally gouge them. I don't have a problem with offliners making money.... not in the least. My problem is charging them 15x what the hosting cost is and giving them a garbage site and calling it a diamond...

Oh,. I see this all the time with local clients. It's becoming extinct though, because even small business owners who aren't computer savvy are wising up to it. I also see a lot of people with stale, outdated websites that cost thousands of dollars to make and hundreds of dollars a year for sluggish webmaster services.

So I develop websites on Wordpress for a fraction of the cost and then provide in house training, giving clients the ability to control their own website and add pictures or updates when needed. That's better business because it brings me more customers.

Since this is a church you seem to care about, I'd suggest offering a wicked good deal or even donating something similar. Good for your portfolio and better for them. I can't say they are being ripped off, because it is common practice for some webmasters to charge maintenance like that. However, you and many of us here can provide a better service for much less.

If the church website has massive traffic, shared hosting won't be enough, and dedicated hosting can go to prices like that and much more.

I'd say it's expense, but not a ripoff.

Don't forget one thing, sure you can do the same website for 50 bucks and another 100 for hosting, but do you pay tax on that, and provide receipt to the customer for your work, things like that add up real fast; you just can't compare the cost of illegal work done by students, with something made by a fully legal company that pays all it's dues.

Oh, I've already offered to do it all for them for free. I don't mind the maintenance fee for hosting and everything, i just mind the 500 of it. That's an exorbitant amount for a site that received negligble traffic and is in no way shape or form in need of "maintenance" lol
