5 sites with my client's domain name but different extensions. How bad for SEO?

I'm trying to get a decent local Canadian ranking for my client's offline business. He has a .ca extension, but the domain name is an acronym and he's been a little reluctant to change it to something with a keyword.

So after another dip in the rankings I did a "site:" search to see what pages are indexed. I found out that there's 5 other sites with the same acronym for the domain name, but different extensions - .com, .com.au, .in, .vn, .nl. All on different subjects.

I know this can't be good and that with Big G it's best to assume everything matters, but I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on how bad this is.
