= 48/2*(9+3)

= 48/2*(12)

= 48/2*12

= 24*12

= 288= 48/2*(9+3)

= 48/2*(12)

= 48/2*12

= 24*12

= 288

Maybe I am weak in Maths but Howtf is it 2 using BODMAS. (Bracket, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction).

Remember "PEMDAS" (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction)?

That's the order in which equations are supposed to be broken down.

Here is the CORRECT answer (I was in Calculus 2 honors):

48÷2(9+3)

48÷2(12)

48÷24

=2

• Thanks x 4

Looks like 2 but it is too obvious and wouldn't deserve a thread. So I'd refrain from giving an answer.

Question is bogus in IRL we would have correct context. that the rule of which multiplication times which comes first is invalid. we would break down the Solutions or factors in multiple ways to double or triple check our work then proceeded to have an answer

8.6666666667

1. Brackets (B)

48÷18+6

2. Division (D)

48÷18=2.6666666667

2.6666666667+6=8.6666666667

This is the one and only solution, the rules of bidmas is a fundamental rule of maths. I rest my case.

Appreciate the indirect reference https://www.mathsisfun.com/operation-order-bodmas.html
There is no times sign between the bracket and the two. If there was, you would then add 9 +3 (Brackets) to get 12 and divide 48 by 2, (Division) and times by 12 (Multiply) to get 288

Because there isn't, first you multiply the two digit by (9 + 3) = 24 (Bracket)
Then divide 48 by 24 (Division) to get 2.
The OP could have just used a calculator if not done already. For a basic arithmetic question I don't see how BHW's 'mathematicians' would be needed. 13. ### ThorrRegistered Member

Your solution with 288 works only for this (48÷2) x (9+3) = 288 but it is different than original question.

You won't believe but in this case the solution is 2 because this is how we learnt in school.
"Multiplication" is in front of "division" so 48÷2(9+3) is exact the same thing as 48÷(2(9+3))

Your solution works only for this (48 ÷2) + (9+3) = 36 which is different than original question.

OMG so you are saying that (48÷2) x (9+3) which is indeed 288 is the same as saying 48÷2(9+3) ???

On all the places I checked, it comes out as the same result of 288.
