    Hi Blackhat!

I have the opportunity to buy a website that has around 450k monthly sessions and around 1.8m monthly page views.
Content has to be added every day. (No adult content)

This site has been around for a long time but now, visitors are steadily declining. In 2014 there were 25% more visitors.
Do you think this trend is stoppable?

Atm this site is solely monetized through Amazon and makes around 1,7k$/month in profits.

The asking price is somewhere between 20-30k$.

My experience with internet marketing is only theoretical. This would be my first website that actually makes money.
I could afford to lose that money but it would be a huge hit in my personal finances.

What do you think? Should I buy?

    Thank you!

Things like this are only worth what people will pay for them, theres no solid rules.

    $1,700 a month x 12 = $20,400 a year

It's going to take a year to get your money back, even more if traffic is dropping.

You need to understand why the traffic is dropping, is it being penalised or has the site owner simply gotten lazy and stopped working on SEO and marketing.

If its the first, avoid it like its a cheap whore with HIV. If its the second you need to figure out if you are capable or capable of finding the right person to work on the site to increase traffic.

It could be a million reasons, but you need to investigate what's causing this and then and only then you need to decide if it can be fixed and how much its worth to you like this.

Traffic like this is a great bartering tool though, don't be afraid to make him an offer.

    Thank you for your reply!

It is definitely the second. I think there where no efforts in SEO or marketing for the last two years at least. Layout of this page is from 2008 or so.

Traffic is ~50% direct, 35% referral, 10% social and 5% searches.

I think I will buy this page just to get into the business. I want to learn how to overhaul money making websites because I think this is a growth market with a lot of potential. Toughts on that ? :)

I think spending $20-$30k on a website is a lot just to learn... if you have never done it before buy a few $500 websites and see what you can do with them.

Only invest what you can afford to lose, if this money is small change then go for it. If its an inheritance or something you will probably end up regretting it.

OP said in post #3 5% of traffic is from searches, they didn't say google searches though.

Consult an expert before you buy it. We guys are good friends but only a few could be experts. So spend some money and get a real expert professional to analyse it thoroughly. Emotions can come to play this game later :).

Why is this bad? That means it is independant and can not be penalized by google and lose traffic, right?

And how are you going to keep that "independence" ? Seller is gonna give you his social media accounts?

    Hi Skyrocket!

Yes I will get his social media accounts. But social media is just 10% traffic as well.

As I wrote above ~50% of traffic is direct. The site is very old, so I thought of giving it a modern look and few more features to retain those direct visitors.
Plus I want to optimise the mobile version as mobile traffic is growing steadily but the current mobile version is far from perfect.

35% is referral traffic from similiar sites. To boost that, my plan is to contact the other sites to establish traffic/link exchanges. This has been done for many years in the past.

    Your thoughts on that?

I do not want to justify doing the deal - I just want to stir discussion to get more information.

But then the second option isn't what is causing the downwards trend. Look into if the niche have gotten more competition, if it is solely on Facebook tracking down on reach, etc. If this is your first ever site, I would suggest you to not buy one for $20K-$30K... unless you're made out of money.

How do I find out if the niche has gotten more competition?
It's an entertainment blog, so there is a lot of competition.
