I tried to promote a ClickBank product for the first time today. Launched a PPC campaign of about 400 clicks (direct to vendor's page), this is the result:

    44,454 Impressions, 400 Clicks, 0.90% CTR

but NO SALES! 400 people intentionally clicked on the advertising, reached the vendor's land page (proved to have a GREAT conversion rate) but didn't buy.

I was hoping to get at least a sale but nothing.

    What went wrong?

    Two things:
    1. Given the fact that you sent them directly to the vendor's landing page, you didn't use adwords and you probably used a garbage PPC network.
    2. You sent them directly to the landing page. Wrong move. Send them to a squeeze page and capture their email. Setup an autoresponder and warm up your prospect.

    Okay. I lied.
    3. The keyword you targeted was not a "buying" keyword. Maybe your prospect was looking for information or a freebie. When you have a visitor like that, they will be turned off by a sales page, no matter how good it is.

None of them. I used Bidvertiser.

    Thanks for the answer.
    1. You got it, I probably used a garbage PPC network; but I did insert the right keywords and selected the right categories, at least what I thought was right to choose.
Question: isn't the Adword's CPC too high to risk investing in a domain + hosting + advertising costs? Is it worth?
    2. I really had doubts about this. Now I regret i didn't create a squeeze page, at least now I could've had some opt-ins...
About this, I have two questions:
2a. What autoresponder service do you think is better for this kind of things? Aweber? MailChimp?
2b. Isn't there the risk to filter (=less visits to the actual vendor page) the clicks by using a squeeze page?

    3. And with this one you really got the point. I was promising a free video in the ad text, they probably watched it and then went away, but it was indeed free. And as I said the vendor's land page has a really good conversion rate... so in the end the answer is that traffic quality was low.

Thanks again for your answer, anyway.

    Yeap, awtprod said it right.

By shaving you mean... something like cheating?
I don't think that could be the case, ClickBank is really big and trusted.
    Bidvertiser, on the other hand...

Welcome to the big bad world!

Sorry, but online, the "trusted" word has already lost a lot of its shine over past few years.

Depends. I don't know your niche. For my niche, the cpc is far too high to be profitable (at least without vouchers :D). Adwords is quite a beast to tackle. It's easy to lose your shirt if you're not careful. FYI, I'm not an affiliate marketer, everything I'm telling you is from my observations. There are other ways to get traffic outside of PPC. One method that I remember off the top of my head is to setup an google alert for your niche and comment on blogs as they post new articles. You can funnel that traffic to an autoresponder and build a list. When a guru in your niche releases a product, promote to your list. Rinse and repeat. If you work hard at that method, you should make some decent money.
I personally haven't used either of them but I think a lot of people use mailchimp to start since it's free for accounts with less than ~2,000 email addresses.
Yes but you will have a much higher conversion rate once your list trusts you. It takes work but you'll be better off than sending cold leads to a sales page.
Yeah. It doesn't matter how good the sales page, they won't buy right away, especially if they're looking for a freebie.

AWeber! MailChimp doesn't allow affiliate links.
