We've been out of the game for about 4 years now. Used some BH techniques back then - namely paid for links, spun articles, article submission sites, etc to boost some of our niche sites. These are all super niche, ecommerce sites for our industry that we did very well in before using some of these techniques.

We lost so hard that I haven't even had the courage to dig in and try to figure out what went wrong. After 4 years, we're trying to revamp these sites. They were our everything. We signed up for SEMRush and it looks like everything tanked in Feb 2012 on all of the sites. From big time traffic to complete flatline. I'm digging into using the disavow tool but SEMRush says I have no toxic links on these sites.

I guess I am just lost. These are sites and niches that we still have cornered but google gives us nearly zero traffic on them now. Just last month we started to notice a little trickle of hope. Apparently they changed something because our phone began to ring again for products on these sites. Not a lot of traffic, but just a tiny bit.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. I've been out of it so long, and gave up so long ago that I dont even know what I am doing anymore. Just looking and hoping to reclaim these businesses.

    Thank you

Thing is Google doesn't accept BH stuff as it used to. You need to be more careful now.

I would advice you to submit your sites to google webmasters tool and see what problems they got, clean them up and see if there is any changes on rankings/traffic. This could probably take some time.

If your site isn't bringing money you could maybe start with a new site and using unique and valuable content instead of spun. Paid links are still being used, just make sure they are good!

You need PBN and SAPE links (some may say the latter is poison) of an ultra high quality, you will proparly not find them in the BST section of this forum. You may even consider to build your own PBN's.

Content is still required to be of a good and high quality but this alone will not rank your site today!

You're asking a very vague/broad question though. You want to start ranking again for those sites?

Is there a penalty on the site? Connect it to WMT if you want to make sure.

Okay, no toxic links but how does your anchor profile look? Spammy? Connect up to WMT and verify.

    Dupe content? Thin content?

How is the on-page? Are all your pages indexed?

Without seeing your site, there is no way someone is going to tell you exactly what's wrong. I'd recommend adding your site into WMT and then waiting a few days to see if you have a penalty. If you have a penalty, then you're in a slightly tricker situation and you'll need to focus on removing that penalty. If you don't have a penalty, you then need to figure out what the problem is - and the problem could be many things.. again, the only way for us to know is if we could see the site.

(BTW, I'm not asking you to share your site.. I'm just saying it's harder and almost impossible for any of us to give you the correct answer without knowing everything about your site).

    You've got 2 options:

    1. Copy all the content, delete the sites and create new ones (new domains). This time, take care while building backlinks.
    2. Hire a SEO expert.

The second option will cost you more. As per your post, you weren't able to brand your domains, your phone is ringing when the G has started sending the traffic again. So, you shouldn't have any problem changing domains. Using new domains will automatically void all the previous links (good, bad or ugly).

Both are quick solutions. The better way would be the one suggested by @Leith but would take a lot more time.

Content length is a 'factor' (one of all the factor which don't change very much). The longer the better.
And I've a secret tool, but don't want to share now.
I use it for large-scale blasting. Amazing result. It is not me, it is the tool.

Just curious. Are you using SAPE as Tier 2? If yes, then what are you pointing them at? PBN's , Web 2.0s?

Not sure how exactly to tell within WMT but multiple sites have messages from google in 2012 about "unnatural links". They don't say much other than to review, and consider anything unnatural.

Here's a graph from one of the sites....

Sorry mate, but that is just plain nonsense, i can rank a piece of content of 100 words easily with the right link power and domain authority, if you do a SERP research into the payday and viagra keywords you will see short content all over the place.

@OP SEO hasn't changed that much, you can blast low value links to your money sites anymore and expect to rank, but everything else still goes, get yourself a Good PBN and some good web 2.0 properties and you can rank almost anything, content is still not king, it is no more than a servant SEO was and still is all about powerful backlinks, backlinks are King Queen and God at the same time.

You can probably recover your sites but it's hard work.

Connect them to webmaster tools and look for any messages.

Then get a fool like ahrefs and look at your backlink profile.

You probably have either a load of spammy links or your anchors are way over optimised- check and report back here and we can advise you further.

Second - make the decision whether you want to pay an SEO expert to do everything for you or you want to try and rank the sites yourself again - answer this and we can advise further.

    This.

With a good foundation of Web2.0s and some powerful PBNs. You can rank for any/every Keywords. Testing this on a very competitive niche.

I would can the websites you have at the moment (or just leave them aside) and start on fresh ones. I also wouldn't put any faith into Google sending you any good free traffic over the coming years, the only way I've been able to stay profitable over the last few months is by paying for traffic... and even then, they will send some fucking useless shit traffic (low conversions) whereas other days convert very well. This appears to happen across organic and paid, but things have got pretty seriously hard since 4 years ago.

You also won't know if they've been hit by an algo penalty like panda or penguin either even if you do connect it to WMT, so I would suggest not wasting your time on them.

If you have a manual penalty you'll need to fix the issue then file for reconsideration. Given the amount of time it shouldn't be impossible to get forgiven if you do everything you are supposed to.

Otherwise... you can simply start new sites from 0 and don't use shitty content and spam links this time around. Might be easier anyway.

I will not argue with people about this; all of the old methods still work, but you cannot go overboard with them. If you want to use automated tools to build links, then rather than a blast you need to build links over a period of months. A single short term blast looks suspicious. Link velocity and time period are some of the things that Rank Brain is tuned for.

Another thing that you have to watch for is actually PBN's. PBN's are all the rage right now. However, because the talk is beating Google with PBN's, Google will look suspiciously at anything they think is a PBN. Your trick, for everything, is to find out what people are doing and not do that, but rather do that which they are not doing.

Everything works the same way, but with some twist. If you are expecting to make money by simply doing the same stuff then that won't work out at all.

Google have changed around a lot of things because a lot of information that was earlier private, went public and Google caught a hold on all those information in order to improve their search results.

Now, it's all about quality, build quality links, work on quality contents and you will be rewarded.

Sounds like to me you were penalized and have a lot of cleaning up to do! 2012 was forever ago in IM so check the
niches again and see how viable they are. You might end up being better off with new sites at this point. Really hard
to tell when you don't have access to them, not that I would give any Joe access. =)
