    Hi guys.

I have recently been targeting a few niches that have high search volume but low adwords comp (no advertisers) and I could not for the life of me get a CTR over 2% (yeah, it sucks). After some ad placement testing, I have finally got a 4-6% CTR. Now I know this isnt too much of a click through but remember, this is untargeted traffic for the ads.

    What I did

Since im using wordpress as my CMS, I downloaded the plugin 'quick adsense' which basically inserts your code for you.

In the options set it to 10 ads (sometimes ads will be missing if you just put 3 due to conflicting code)

The first ad box: 300x250 ad, aligned left at start of post
2nd ad box: 728x90, aligned centre at middle of post
3rd ad box: 728x90, aligned centre at end of post

For the ad colour, choose something bright (yet readable) and a different colour to the rest of the site e.g. if your sites theme is white and blue, choose red for your ads

I have not added any other ads as I dont want an overkill of ads as this will more than likely make the visitor click the back button.

    PLEASE NOTE

These are the steps that I have taken to double the CTR on MY site. It may not work for your site. This layout was produced from split testing a few different combos over the course of about 3 months

you are complaining on 2% CTR? I get .9 on great days .4 or .5 on normal days but I get millions of millions of hits per month on multiple multiple sites. It is also optimized for ads as per the adsense help files. I wish I had a 2% CTR fuck me man. jesus. I would 4x my monthly income. I would probably not sleep for a week and officially retire somewhere

Glad things worked out for you though. hopefully your sites fly and you get mad traffic.

What is your ad placement like? have you tested different ad sizes/placements/colours?

Yes. I know adsense like the bible. Tried many different things. Blending, opposite colors like you mentioned. I even built a script that would alter the ad colors (based on ads i created) on new to returning visitors. You name it I tried it. Above the fold, below the fold, placement based on article size. Got too much and the return was not solid so I just leave it as blended lighter color and I am happy with the results. I don't use wordpress. I hate it. So I am not sure on that setup. I have my own custom built blogging software that travels from site to site

I cannot get anything stable above .5 for the life of me. Todays CTR so far on my main account is 0.65%. But the way I see it is I am happy with the returns, never had anything bad happen except the odd click bomber that tries to ban my account because of a competitive niche which always fails...I see it as free money.

If I had 4% CTR with my traffic? my god. I suppose I could rebuild my template or pick different niches but I just don't have the energy and as you said it might not work for everyone. I followed googles help files on where ad placement should be and built my template on that.

4% is an amazing job but just make sure the ads are targeted and your conversions work for the advertisers. If advertisers complain you end up in a big mess..especially new adsense accounts.
