So about 10 years ago, when I didn't know anything about SEO, I bought a domain & built a site. The site now has PR4 & lots of relevant backlinks from all over the place, half of which are links from people who liked the site. I get decent traffic from G, but most of the traffic is from referrals. The problem is that the domain name is as idiotic as it gets for SEO & it's a big setback for ranking higher. The site is usually ranking on the second page of G for a large number of keywords. Now if I get a different domain & 301 redirect it, would it be a smart choice at this point or should I just leave it alone?

The 301 will def generate some link juice however you can't replace the 10 year domain age benefit. I would keep it and do the reverse. 301 the new domain to the old and start hammering the shite out of the new one.
