301 redirects expired domains

I was wondering is it worth buying an expired domain and simply doing a 301 redirect? Will it carry juice? I am looking at a half decent domain in the science niche 12 years old ..is it worth spending 300 at auction to 301 redirect it or am I better of rebuilding the site? It has some.high quality links and only expired this year.
