301 Redirects and SERPS

I have bought a number of domains that include the exact keywords I am trying to rank for on another site. If I set up a simple 301 re-direct for these domains to my main site will this help with SERPS?

I plan to add content to the domains eventually but was wondering what the impact would be short term - if any.
