If you can afford to lose your money site, 301 it, if not, build a site on it and link to your money site/use it as a private blog.

Am talking about losing your money site because 301 may or may not work. Though, if the domain is 5+ years old and is niche relevant to your money site, there is quite a possibility that a 301 will help increase your money site's rankings.

    It all depends,

You could setup a HQ feeder sight with a link to your money site or do what I do (below).

Setup the new domain with a mini site with unique content relating to your niche. Send some HQ links to it and wait until Google indexes it. Wait 3-4 weeks then 301 it to your main site. Rinse and repeat.

Does giving a rich man some fake money discredit him? If you have a very authoritative site, then a 301 from a related source won't affect.

You need to see what ratio of links of your money site are we talking about here? If its more than 25% then you should really take things slow and analyse what wold be the best way forward. How are the anchors that the site has etc? Are most of the pages linking to the homepage or you can recreate some of the authoritative pages on your site?

    again, it all depends.

    Two questions:
    1. If the two sites are similar and have a similar backlink profile, what are the chances?

    2. If it does not work, wouldn't removing the 301 undo the negative effect?
