    Lets say I have a site basketballshoes.com

Its currently ranked 2nd for basketball shoes.

I have to change the domain and site, Im not allowed to just sell basketball shoes.

Is it possible to do a 301 from basketballshoes.com to newdomain.com/basketball-shoes? Has anyone ever done that?

Would it make more sense to just 301 the domain to the new one, change the content? Im not allowed to have basketball shoes in the headers, ect.

Am I thinking about it to much? Its not that competitive keyword but I just dont want to lose the seo work Ive already done and have to start from scratch.

Yes you can do that. I've done the exact same thing before. It seemed as thought I managed to retain most of the link juice. Since you will be going from an exact-match domain, you'll probably see a small drop in rannking.
