Or can I just do a redirect at the nameserver?

Bought an expired domain that was a pretty big site in my niche; all legit links from authority sites.. in the exact same niche as my site.

If I do to do a 301... Should I put content on the old site and then redirect it? I read that you can do it at the nameserver level (I have name.com) without having to put content up? Which way is better?

Also, is it better for me to do a 301 and redirect it to my current site (which already has links) or start a new site on the expired domain? It's in the same niche (both makeup/cosmetics niche) and the expired domain has links from high authority beauty blogs that i would have a difficult time getting links from (or have to pay hundreds of dollars per link)...
Anchors are all brand or naked urls

I am thinking it's best to redirect because that way i will have one site with lots of authority versus having it spread out over 2 sites?

Did you buy the site as an expired domain or while the content was still up?

If you want to take my advice, better put content on expired domain as these authority sites upon learning that link is 302 they will surely remove that link.

If this is the case and it was an expired domain, your best bet to maintain those backlinks is to put all of the content from the original site back up as soon as possible. Sometimes search engines will see a site go down and come back up with the same content and re-index all of those backlinks as they think the original owner accidentally let the domain expire then renewed it. If it has been expired for a while those backlinks are probably going to be gone.

You can redirect it right away since its niche related.

What i do is. Build the website with title, description, article similar to my money site keywords. Get it indexed with some backlinks. After 2-3 days or if you have time wait for 1 week-1 month and then redirect the domain to the money site.

Bought as an expired content... domains is no longer up...

No I don't think they will notice or care as the links are in old blog posts from years or ago and some were part of blog shout outs that high authority blogs do like "see this story at etc.com".... No one goes back and checks their old blog posts from years ago... these high authority beauty sites are all too busy writing new blog posts and accepting sponsored posts from companies like Revlon etc.. some of these beauty blogs even have their own agents (to hook them up with big brands that need exposure etc).

Also, should I put up the exact same content as what was on it before? I see it on archive... Front page had 6 posts... should i copy all of them over?

    or something else beauty related?

How long ago did it expire? Is the old content still indexed or can you only find it on archive?

First put some relevant content on the domain and let it sit for a while. Then 301 redirect it to your main domain.

I always build a site on a domain that i am going to 301, my hypothesis is that Google can't see domains that are not indexed as their existence is unknown (if that makes any sense) , i have no proof of that but it is a gut feeling, what i do is build a quick wordpress site, fill it with some (relevant) content from the internet, have it totally indexed using google's WMT, them remove it from WMT and 301 it.

If the pages are same like
    old-domain.com/page-url1
    new-domain.com/page-url1

You should keep content few week when you done 301 permanent redirect.

If the contents & pages are completely new, don't required to keep content on old domain. You just can do it 301 redirect.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I think I will put a site on it just to be safe and wait for it to index.

It is currently indexed but not the old site that's indexed but the standard namejet page which has links to cash advance and debt consolidation with a big "you can backorder this domain" link... but its indexed though...

I would build it out again and just link from it to my money site. But if you are dead set on 301ing, put up the old content first, let it reindex, then 301 it.
