I am building a new website on an expired domain.

This expired domain has 120 old pages with backlinks pointing at them.

Is it ok to 301 these 120 pages to 8 new pages on the domain?

Or is that to many to 301 to 8 pages? Its over 10 per page.

Google will treat a 301 as a soft 404 if the topical relevance of the old page that you're redirecting isn't the same as the new one.

Its not to do with numbers.

    Ain't 404's errors?

So by me doing this will hurt the pages and not help them rank?

They are both in the health niche, but in totally differents realms of health.

That's not the best practice. The most effective one anyway.

Try to re-create as many as you honestly. With unique content but relevant to the original.

That's what I would do anyway.

It will set your website well on its way to being an authority in the niche.

He's saying don't host all your domains on the same webhost.

A "soft 404" is Google terminology for treating the page as if it were linking to a non-existent page. So if you get a soft 404, the message is that Google is ignoring the link.

404's don't hurt your site but obviously they're not going to help you rank higher. They have no effect.

To 301 a page successfully, the original and the destination have to be about the same topic, such as "dry dog food that improves your dog's coat". Google is expecting pretty much the same content on the new page as the redirected page.
