I understand quite a bit more than when I started and today changed some product pages to optimise them for search terms, including WP slugs. Is it safe to 301 redirect the old pages, or am I better to let Google drop the old pages and index the new?

    Thanks

Redirect them! Or else you may lose traffic that is coming through those pages.

Even Google says that you should redirect !

Google wont drop the old URLs for a long long time unless they return a 410 HTTP response. So if you aren't doing that you need to redirect the old URLs to the new (don't redirect to the homepage... thats a soft 404), you need to update the canonical URLs on every page, you need to update your navigation and advertising URLs, and you need to update and republish your sitemaps and product feeds. Even if you execute flawlessly you could still see a drop in rankings for a number of weeks. Early on you will see new URLs competing with old URLs in the SERPs.

301-redirecting is the recommended course of action. But, I doubt you will gain anything SEO-wise from this in the short run, unless Google has trouble crawling/indexing your site because of the URLs (which is very unlikely).

Thanks for the advice. So I checked all the indexed pages on google and when I click the link it is already taking me to the updated page even though I have not redirected yet.

Edited old page, including slug > updated > checked on google > new URL resolving for updated slug/page.

Tried this in a fresh browser, still the same. Is WP doing something here I am not aware of?
