3 of my sites recover from Google Penguin in a few days after I performed this simple task. I am not sure if this is a coincidence or a real fix.
The 3 sites that got penalized dropped about 75 spots. All I did was I logged on to my webmasters account and switched my geographic target from global to local. A few days later, they all started to move up like 10 spots a day. Now they are pretty much where they used to be before Penguin. I am baffled. I am not sure if this is temporary fix, a coincidence, or permanent. Anyone out there have any insight with Google webmaster?s geographic target?

I've often wondered what the effects of geographic targeting might be. For my E-commerce sites, much of the traffic is international, so this method would not work... but for other sites, it might. I'm going to test out this setting and hope for the best.

(My sites not penalized, but the traffic might still go up)

Actually It depends. I think you site is for the local viewers and you got the effect due to this reason. But if you have a lot of international visitors then I don't think it would work.
    thanks

It seems that you would have gained the ranks back anyway, this was just the last signal for Google to bounce your website back to top SERPs.

I've seen similar things happening after website have removed the bottle necks in their loading times, removed their high bounce content, redirected all the 404 pages and made the titles and meta tags more natural.

Don't fix something that isn't broken. You might not retrieve the traffic completely even if you revert all changes.

Very skeptical that something so small like this would work. But will give it a try. Have nothing to lose. :)

OP, until proven otherwise, this sounds more like an anecdotal coincidence.

I cannot run any tests because I pulled google from all of my sites but if anyone cares to run tests on a number of sites, let us know.

I mentioned this before in one of the many "How i beat the penguin" threads where you could clearly see in their rank tracking tools that they were targeting a local market. All my sites are built using the same backlinking techniques, i.e they all come from the same pages, and all but the ones that are geotargeted to google.co.uk were hammered by the penguin, and yet the localized ones despite all anchor text 100% targeting 2 keywords have actually risen.

I tried targeting one of my other sites to U.S local market after seeing this effect, and while im working on fixing it's backlink profile, but have not had the same luck so maybe this only works in google.co.uk and the likes :-/

Sadly this wouldn't work if we got most our traffic internationally.

What exactly happens when you change the geographical location? What exactly is this option for? If I chose UK rather than global, would this mean my international website visitors wouldn't find my site?
