What do you think is more likely to get you s better ROI?

3 months of white hat link building at $200 for a solid link for 5 links a month vs. $800 in Google AdWords spending.

I'm sure it can vary by industry but if you had to guess generally which do you think has more potential to be profitable sooner.

    Thanks

Adwords for quicker results , but you have to master that . Go ahead and optimize your shop really well , also optimize the website not only for adwords , you'll need to get some leads to have a positive ROI .

You can go simultaneously with both , so eventually you'll cut the costs of adwords by pushing with seo . Remember , to obtain a good CPC with adwords you'll need to test a lot of things , if you're new to it , better invest the money wisely in a different marketing strategy .

Established. My own site has some big keywords sitting at position 8-10. And a couple medium ones around position 5.

With that said if I can getAdWords to be profitable that could contribute to my SEO budget as well.

    E-commerce site I guess!?
Use adwords for keywords , that site is not ranked with, and better use [exact] in adwords (cheaper, less traffic, but time saver for adding negative words). You can see for wich keywords you are already ranked from webmasters tools. If you are very new in adwords, better hire expert.

Of cource the both. Organic traffic have higher ROI, but without adwords you may miss leads/sales special after their fakin update from this year with 4 ads/page.

Don't think $800 in adwords are enough for 3 months even targeting only the keywords with high commercial intend (cost,price,cheap,sale...). The cheaper campign I ever made was $0.05/click and got 200 clicks/day and it was for bulbs sale lol.

I'm suggesting to all my friends to start with adwords and invest the profits back in SEO, but this is for sites that starts.
One of my friends use only adwords and on-page SEO last 5 years and now have 6-7 repeat clients everyday. Other friend just closed its firm becasue adwords and competition.

If you are planning to use banner advertising, better find relevant sites, that use adsense and ask them for banner for monthly fee (calculate the value from metrics e.g. alexa traffic) - very good technique for backlink+traffic and is just between adwords and SEO.

Adwords would get you quicker results and traffic.

Something I'd be curious to see is who gets more sales- an ad in the top results for an ecommerce niche or a top 3 ranking for ecommerce keywords.

fb ads (so much cheaper but buyers are slightly earlier in buying stages) AND seo.

Unless your profit margins are thick adwords will cripple your roi.

AdWords helps you to generate faster results. If you want to make profits, instead of losses, you should monitor properly. On the other hand, once you start getting organic traffic by means of SEO, this will continue long term and offer good results.
