    Hello Everyone,

I have been working on taking the number one spot for my keyword.

I have a PR3 and 70 more backlinks than the number one site. They have 0 backlinks and no page rank.

I need some advice, what else can I do to beat them?

Here is the screenshot from market samurai.

I need your help. Any will be appreciated. John

Don't know about your program but the first site does show a DMOZ listing and no backlinks? DMOZ is a backlink - and a good one but hard to get these days.

Try using yahoo site explorer and check the backlinks for the number one site again.

Also, domain / website age may be playing against you.

So, your question is what can you do? More links from strong sources. Article marketing, link wheel and the like. 70 links in itself is not that many.

Build a linkwheel, that should do the trick.

Hmm, I just check yahoo site explorer and the number one guy is actually a PR5 and has over a thousand backlinks. But the actual page that is number one has no backlinks or page rank. I should be able to beat him right?

Have patience. If the number one site is an authority site google will give it preferential treatment. By this I mean that it will take some time to get there.

First of all you have a total of 70 backlinksl. That's pretty low in my book. Second. What is the quality of those backlinks. What is the pagerank ? Do you have backlinks with PR5, PR6 ? If so, how many ? Third how old is your site ? 4th how many pages do you have?

    What to do- persevere
Create links using social networking sites. Bookmark them. Create new pages of content. I think google weights this aspect very seriously. So create fresh content. Another thing. Of those 70 links you have, how many have the optimized word in the anchor text ?
These questions should give you a guideline of what you should do. Last thing. Don't forget that the site is in Dmoz. That means more work for you. :p

just curious did you do basic seo on your site?

if not that can make a huge difference, you should implement basic seo on every site you do no matter how small or big a project...

doing so will certainly increase the effectiveness of any backlinks you get and possibly reduce the amount you need to see the results you want...

    hope that helps

    thanks

i would say examine your content arrangement in a text browser, add more unique content, maybe some extra dynamic content (rss) and get more high PR backlinks. just keep building these things and you must prevail!

If you jumped to the number one spot don't change anything.

Too many times I've tweaked myself down a couple slots, just knowing my changes were gonna be great - not!

Maybe keep the link building going tho.

Kind of off-topic, but what if the op had a static site which wasn't built to be updated frequently? Can a completely static site still rank #1 in a competitive niche?

Have you used a professional SEO analysis tool? I like iBusinessPromoter (crack available here - just search). It has a competitive analysis report that compares your site and the other top 10 Google results sites for your chosen keyword. It reports on several dozen on-site and off-site factors that affect rankings and shows you exactly where your site stands in relation to the other top 10 sites for each factor. Then it makes specific recommendations about what you can do to be more competitive. These can be as specific as, for example, less keyword density in your H1 tags and META keywords, more keyword density in your H2 - H6 tags, and more variety in the anchor text for your backlinks. I mean, this thing is thorough. It eliminates a lot of the guesswork.

I've seen several folks ridicule IBP because it only submits to a few dozen directories. Don't be fooled. That competitive analysis report is worth its weight in gold.

    Hope this helps.

Interesting so you made #1 a day after you made the OP? It looks like the #1 spot has a DMOZ link and 11,000 links to the domain itself (BLD). The #2 site has more than 5000 links to the domain and a DMOZ link. I'm not surprised that you were number 3 but I am really surprised if you are saying you are now number 1.

I wondered the same thing but the OP said he added new content. My first thought is, is new content that important to Google to put him above sites that have higher PR and backlinks? Could this also be a case of the age of the content on the two previous sites? If it's pretty old Google may not consider it as worthy and gave him the top spot.
